Gov. Cuomo will visit the U.S. Virgin Islands on Friday to assess damage from Hurrican Irma because their governor — who is a Brooklyn native and former NYPD cop – asked Cuomo to tour the damage and help with recovery.
“In the wake of Hurricane Irma, I invited Governor Cuomo to the US Virgin Islands to tour the damage and assist in our recovery effort,” said Gov. Kenneth Mapp.
Mapp said the rebuilding effort will be an “immense task.”
“We have a special connection with New York, as more US Virgin Islands residents list their place of birth as New York than any other state in the nation,” he said.
“As someone who was born in Brooklyn and served in the 83rd precinct on Wilson avenue, I understand the resiliency and can-do attitude of New Yorkers.”
Cuomo will bring an assessment team to figure out how the state can best help the islands recover from Hurricane Irma, which drove 150-mile-an-hour winds across St. Thomas and St. John. The islands are devastated and residents lack power.
“It’s important to understand the full scope of the destruction in order to provide the kind of targeted assistance that will help the victims of this storm get back on their feet,” Cuomo said.
He added that New York’s emergency responders and planners have experience dealing with the aftermath of hurricanes because of Sandy.
“We not only have assets, but valuable experience on how to rebuild and recover following the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, and we are going to help in any way we can,” he said.
It was not immediately clear whether the governor would board a private, commercial or public flight.
