Around 2007, I shot a highpower match in PA and was squaded next to Carl Bernosky. For those who don't him, he is a 7 - 8 time National Champion in highpower rifle and few other shooting disciplines. His rifle had weights attached to it in the for-end for the right balance in offhand. He used a medical tape, the kind which is used to attach IV's to the arm and so on. It looked as crude as it can be. He ended up setting a National record on that day, I shot my personal best as well. They forgot to register that match with the NRA and his National record was never made official His reaction was, who cares, I know what I shot.

I agree, not a fan of the wood but it looks amazing.

It really is, at some point ill try to do something similar. My 1894 is the new 16" ss model with the grayish black laminate. Id like to try the full length mlock handguard and get/make some matching plates to accent the stock.

Making a concerted effort to improve a gun is not the same thing as “Bubbaing” a gun. If you “bubba” a gun, in my opinion, you are making changes and not really caring if they work out or not, or worrying too much about the aesthetics of it. You on the other hand are improving the function and appearance of the gun. Go for it.I'm sure I'll get a lot of hate for doing this but I'm not a huge fan of wood furniture, especially in the standard lacquer finish.
So far I have removed the stock wood handguard and have replaced it with a Midwest Industries rail and attached a Magpul AFG-2.
I have everything on order and should expect all my parts to arrive by the end of next week.

I “bubba’d” up my Hi Point Carbine and was happy that it all worked out. If it hadn’t, I would have been okay with that. I have to say it looks pretty cool now.
To Bubba the gun is usually used to describe attaching aftermarket parts to an antique or vintage military (or collectible) rifle. Permanent modifications that can't be reversed without leaving drilled holes or other machining marks or when original parts that were replaced are no longer kept. If the gun can be reassembled into original configuration, then it's "acceptable".

I wanted to, but I just Can’t dislike these modern day “ upgrades “ to an Old school style rifle. I wouldn’t do it to one of my older rifles but I would certainly do it to a newer one, just for shits and giggles.

How difficult was it to replace the hand guard ? I have been looking at doing something similar, just not sure what I want to do with my 1895, except I definitely want to put a large loop lever on, the stock one is way to small
It was actually very easy, maybe 15 minutes. The instructions were very clear.

Here she is completed. I know the Loading Gate is missing, the damned screws are so soft. I over torqued the screw and broke it, a new one (bought four just in case) should arrive tomorrow.
I had to file down the wood below the hammer spur extension since the Boyds stock runs a little higher. The bottom of the bolt would end up making a hard contact with the top curve of the hammer spur.
And I finished it off by drilling and tapping a hole for the rear sling mount on the underside of the Boyds stock.

ok, I got my Midway hand guard and installed it Friday night, it was a challenge to say the least.
First I removed the cap, and the wood hand guard was jammed in there so tight I couldn't budge the stupid thing. the front of the hand guard got hung up on the screw mounts for the cap. I finally just broke it to get it off.
the instructions said to "reinstall the cap? I could not figure out how to install the MI hand guard with the cap in the way, and the only way to get the cap off was to remove the magazine tube. Let me tell you, that freaking spring is powerful, that fucker went shooting across the room like a bullet
me and the wife spent 10 minutes looking for the spring cap. Anyway, after getting the cap off and the magazine tube back together I got the MI-hand guard on, it looks great, but my hand guard cap was a huge PITA. i was at my camp in the Adirondacks where the internet/cellphone service is slower than dial-up in the 90's, so I had no way of getting on here or calling anyone for help, but I managed to get through it.
Next Im installing a big loop lever, I already have Skinner Alaskan peep sites on the gun, which I LOVE. then Im installing a Leather ammo cuff to trim out the gun.
I'll take pictures next week
