Had an interesting day at work today. A coworker who was driving the company truck a few weeks ago got a ticket (mailed to our company) for failing to stop for a stopped school bus with a $300 penalty.
However, the owner of the company has both front and rear facing dash cams that are 1080p with GPS speed, lat/long, and date/time installed in all of the company owned vehicles.
Long story short, my coworker got flagged to pass the stopped school bus by the bus driver, as clearly seen in the dash cam video. My coworker did stop for the stopped school bus, and waited about 3 and 1/2 minutes to see if the driver was going to close the stop arms, but didn't. The bus driver then stuck their head/almost half their torso out the window and yelled to pass while giving the go ahead signal. As my coworker approached the bus, they asked the bus driver if everything was OK and the driver said they were having mechanical problems with the bus.
I'm not going to mention exactly where/any names, but I'll be generic and it was in Eastern Upstate, NY, somewhat rural. School district owned busses.
So my boss called the school district asking for their bus maintenance garage and they begrudgingly transferred him over. Spoke to the supervisor of the garage, and they played it off like none of their drivers would ever do that. Until my boss said he had high resolution dash cam footage calling him out on it. The supervisor changed their tune and said "oh, yeah, we had bus issues that day, blah, blah, blah...". The supervisor told him to send a scanned copy of the ticket along with the dash cam footage in an email and he said he would take care of it.
Mean while, me being me, I was like you know, I smell something funny here. I don't think there's a damn thing the bus garage supervisor can do to expunge a ticket and I told my boss to call the local town police in which the school district resides. So my boss calls the town police, and they laughed and said no, you got to deal with the company that deals with the traffic cams on the busses. They gave him the number. We call them next, and got put on hold for almost an hour before we got some lady that was extremely rude. The rude lady gave my boss an email to send the ticket and the video footage in and was given a case number.
Within 20 minutes of my boss sending the ticket with the video feed to the company, they get a response stating that they reviewed the case and will be working to expunge the ticket as it was a false ticket, and they will be receiving a notification in the mail. Of course my boss printed it out and saved like 3 copies of the email in different places.
I could only imagine if there was no dash cam. My coworker would've likely been out a job.
We now have a policy that no passing school busses with any type of top light flashing (except turn signals or the lower hazards).
Incredible how much power bus drivers have. They are practically police officers at that point.
This isn't the first time our dash cams saved our hide. A coworker got hit by a sedan 6 years ago with a dude high up on pot. And they weren't as high resolution as they are now, but it made for some interesting video.
