I used to teach Consumer Math. Checkbooks, comparison pricing , interest calculation on loans and cc’s. It went away with the advent of Math 1,2 and 3.

Does their household debt not include mortgages? We have about $134k in debt but $130k of that is our mortgage. The other $4k is our truck loan that will be paid off shortly and one of my wife’s student loans. I thought we were doing pretty well until I read this article. Seems a bunch of people have debt for everything from random purchases on credit cards to furniture, hot tubs, boats, vacations and vehicles they can’t really afford. Our truck that is almost paid off was purchased new but is a pretty basic pickup by todays standards. Hell it’s even a regular cab.

I know a lady who bought a house for $64,000 20 years ago and she owes more than that now. She lives alone and was making $160,000. She currently has 3 mortgages on the home. She redid the house on crest and has multiple light fixtures worth over $1,000 each. I’m not sure every light fixture in my house adds up to much over $1,000.

My best friend has a neighbor that bought a house because "it just perfect" and "exactly what I wanted" and then after closing decided she didn't like the way the roof line looked and wanted an open beam concept and raised the roof and combined two rooms to make a great room, then the flooring wasn't 'right' so had all the hardwood flooring ripped out and replaced. Last my buddy knew she was well over the original purchase price just remodeling and the house sold for about $150K and will never be worth much more because where it is. She has since moved in with her boy friend and is renting the house out.

And the house is now trashed.
My brother and his wife own a house and live there now but they recently bought another house worth about $550,000. They have not moved in since it’s in another city and he has to stay in the city we live in due to the contract. They were thinking of renting it out and I cautioned them against it. They never did, but they are paying a mortgage on a $550,000 for over a year now and they have never slept there as far as I know. Their kids are now in a better s hill though so I’m sure it’s worth it for that alone/sarcasm.
People do really stupid things. My house was $150,000 and it’s big enough and nice enough for me. Is it prefer to, hell no, but that’s life. Nothing is perfect.
