Discussion: Storing ammo in gun safe with guns

Talking with a buddy recently and they mentioned they don’t keep ammo in the safe with the guns. I understand ideally if you had a 2nd gun safe it would be best to keep them separate but I don’t.

Hoping you guys can weigh on what you do and what you think is best practice. Correct me if I’m wrong but the I think the updates to the nys law just says guns need to be locked up if you have children under 16, don’t think it mentions ammo location.

There's lots of different ways to go about it, depends on your specific needs. There's nothing wrong at all with having ammo locked in the same safe as guns. Whatever works for you.

Ammo takes up too much space. I keep some boxes of defensive rounds and loaded mags in the safe, but regular range/training ammo is kept in metal ammo boxes elsewhere.

Do rioters and looters obey laws? Have those laws been enforced? Is there a NY minimum age for rioting and looting?

Given the current social climate my gun safe is open and the ammo cabinet is not locked. There are several loaded firearms throughout the house. Wife and daughter can field a 12 gauge and handguns.

Any parent worth a bean has taught their 10 year old about gun safety and started them shooting.

This is not a drill.

If your ammo can fit in the safe you don't have nearly enough.

Not a good idea.
As said before it takes up too much space plus it adds a lot of
weight to the safe depending on where the safe if located, eg. (2nd Fl.).
Better off in a locked ammo can or a locked cabinet in a dark area at room temperature.
I prefer plastic or wood over metal for these containers.

I have most of my ammo locked in an old metal lab cabinet in my basement. Guns are in various safes. Two defensive pistols in my bedroom always locked, loaded, ready to go with 3 extra mags each gun.
my guns in my bigger safe are not far away from my bedroom and have a mix of guns and ammo. Not much ammo but enough to defend my home for an extended tiMe period. Some guns in my larger safe are loaded as well. AR’s just need bolts closed and they are ready to go. .45 pistol is cocked and locked.

I just put them loosely in ammo cans. It’s the simplest way that takes up the least amount of room. One ammo can holds thousands.

I keep some defense ammo and loaded mags in my safe, but the vast majority of mine is in stacked ammo cans off the floor in the basement. It's just a matter of space.

Some really bulky stuff (12ga bird shot) is stored in plastic totes.

Pretty much the same here; I do also use totes to organize some other stuff I dont keep in bulk (expensive- for me- or speciality stuff like .300 WinMag and .222, etc). The weight issue is definitely a real thing along with the space issue.

Not enough room in the safe , that's what the shelves in the garage are for! With that being said I still keep plenty of ammo in the house.

I have multiple safes and storage cabinets.

I have safes for ammo and I have safes for guns.

All of the guns in my safe are loaded and at least one spare filled magazine for each gun. Long guns and pistols.

I have Stack on storage cabinets for my ammo.

Every magazine is filled and stored. I have a shit ton of plastic ammo cans from harbor freight. Some of those cans are filled with loose rounds and some are just pack with store bought boxes of ammo.

I do not store separate because of any laws that may or may nor exist. I do it out of personal preference.

Ammo is on a metal warehouse shelving unit in my shop...I dont understand why people lock ammo up in a safe.

The vast majority of my ammo is stored in ammo cans, separated by cartridge type and lot number, kept in a separate room (same floor close by).

I keep a loaded handgun in my handgun safe, under the bed my side, along with 1 extra box of ammo.

The keys to my rifle/shotgun safe, also in my bedroom, are kept in the handgun safe.

There is also a Mini-30 not in the safe, along with loaded mags of various capacities on my dresser. This is fairly recent additional prep, due to civil unrest which elevated home security to DefCon 3.

Ammo loose and in bulk in ammo cans, boxes of SD pistol ammo in original boxes on my desk and other boxes of various ammo stacked on top of my safe. Not enough room to store everything in the safe. I pay no attention to any laws regarding things that happen within the walls of my home. Who is going to see it?

I store all ammo in a conditioned space. I would worry about temperature fluctuations in the garage shortening the lifespan.

Of course we're probably talking about reducing a 50 year storage life to 20 years, but I still like to keep it well protected.

I have a gun safe with my long guns and some pistols in it and a 52" top and bottom tool box with ammo and pistols and gun parts in it. Not worried about keeping them separate.

small Arms ammo even in metal cans does not create enough pressure during a case rupture to cause sympathetic detonations, you are not going to get a mass detonation of small arms ammo in a Fire.

In a fire ammo loaded in the chamber of a firearm will cook off and be just as lethal as if it were fired on purpose.

I tend to keep ammo in the same MAIN gun safe but have them in seperate locking metal cabinet or something like that so they are in the same place but ammo is locked up on its own within the locked gun safe?! I have the room as its a closet I turned into a gun safe so to speak. So I have the room.
