On a NYS DMV Statement of Transaction (DTF-802), there's an option to receive a vehicle as a "gift", in this case a snowmobile. If the transaction is listed as a "gift", the seller has to complete Section 6 which asks if there were any services, debt, or property exchanged as a condition of said gift.
Question. If this was a pure gift of generosity, does the DMV make some sort of fair market value assumption and charge sales tax (yet again) for the transaction or is the net sales tax simply $0.00?
Any help / experience would be appreciated.
