fifteen inch on the rings, twenty on the bases,,,that shit is cast from a poor alloy, but yea, I get your point."oKaY sIR, diD yOu mAkE sUrE tO tOrQuE oNlY tO 20 iNcH pOuNdS?"
Isn't that a leap mount though? Is says on their website they're all machined from billet 7075-T6 aluminum. I couldn't imagine spending $400 on a cast aluminum mount.fifteen inch on the rings, twenty on the bases,,,that shit is cast from a poor alloy, but yea, I get your point.
looking at the picture of the broken pieces, it looks more like a casting than a machined part...could be wrong, especially given my eyesight.Isn't that a leap mount though? Please surrender your mount and Ben Abbott is here to tell you why? I agree with your assessment on why the materials failed. Cool a design and probably easier to install with the flip over hinged design but really?7075 is a TOUGH alloy. I've broken many sets of cutters trying to get through 7075 cable.
Supposedly these mounts are machined, not cast.
The thickness of the casting at the hinge looks like it should have held up. 20 inch pounds on those screws should only be making 100-150 lbs of force.
Either they're using bad alloy, the part is getting too hot when they machine it, or they're screwing up the heat treatment.
I'd bet they're getting too aggressive with their machining and are cooking the aluminum.
Not that it matters. Get a refund and move on.
I don't want a replacement mount, nor do I have time to be gaslit about improper torque. It's a bad design, I don't want it on my rifle. I never liked the rail attachment method either.Went looking about that issue. $400 is to much to loose. This was very common with that mount.
On AR-15.com this was the form to be filled out sent to him by the company.
