Does this look used to you guys?

Hey, just found this forum, just purchased first handgun. Shop sold it as new, but upon further inspection I am not sure now.

I am not sure if the g42 comes with a cleaning rod/brush. but I was under the assumption that all glocks did, everything looked like it had been gone through.

I don't know much about how these should look new, but I took a bunch of photos, I know that the brown stuff is probably just normal lube/oil etc. I am just wondering if there are any tell-tale wear signs on the metal/poly that I should be aware of. (the white crud is from my genius choice to use a cheap paper towel to put the parts on)

Hey there, well.. I'm not sure that it is. just picked it up last night, its missing cleaning stuff, and to me it looks like theres some wear on the slide lock part. and overall it just doesn't seem new. but i dont know anything, thats why im double checking, hopefully took decent enough pics.

Also this store has a range and people can rent guns there.

They may have sold you display gun one that's been handled and racked I have G19 and it came with accessories found this on G42

Looks new to me. If not, they did a phenomenal job of cleaning it. The mag followers look brand new as used magazines will get rubbing from the rounds and fouling from firing. I suppose new magazines could be put in the box though. The thing that most makes me believe that it's new is the picture of the inside of the slide and that copper anti seize. That's how they come from the factory. Although I guess someone could put it on there after the fact but it's not a common lubricant. The only thing I don't like is that same picture with the copper anti seize also has what appears to be brass rubbing on spine. Did you rack rounds through the gun? Or maybe it's just more anti seize catching the light at a different angle. Also, it should come with a cleaning rod, lock etc but then again they may have lost them. I'm about 90/10 that it's a brand new gun though. Nice piece

Looks new to me. Any wear or discoloration on barrel, particularly at top of barrel hood where it meets ejection port at top of slide and also around perimeter of barrel near muzzle? Any noticable wear at inside of slide at ejection port? Any chips on edge of extractor? Inside of barrel and chamber clean? Barrel will normally show some discoloration and wear in bluing after just a short time of shooting. I had a G42. "Think" it came with a nylon bore brush and plastic rod. Did you check under foam in case? Good luck with it and stay safe.

As stated above, everything is very clean, with almost no wear on parts that rub.

Something to keep in mind is that every gun is going to have been testfired and inspected at the factory prior to shipment, and will be handled several times by the dealer to check the serial number when its being logged into and out of his books.

All of my Glock pistol cleaning accessories are still in the empty Glock cases the pistols came in. They're right next to any locks that Glock included. The pistols are in safes.

All I use to clean Glock pistols is a bore snake, a rag, and a touch of some kind of cleaner/lube. 5 minutes is more than enough time. Having to use a rod and brush would add too much time to my routine since I despise cleaning guns.

Let's say worst case they used it at the range a few times. Does that really matter? It would be like buying a "new" car that a customer prior has driven around. The bow I bought I was able to shoot before buying, and it's very possible I wasn't the first.

Ultimately,that gun is capable of tens of thousands of rounds (or more). You will literally never wear it out, even if it's had a few rounds shot down the barrel

Entirely possible it was a display model for even a day and then they lost the bits out of the box. You could ask and see if they have them or a duplicate pair

Thanks for that detailed response sir. you seem to know all the intricacies for sure. As for racking rounds, I have not even purchased rounds yet because I have read that the 42 is finicky, and I don't know what to buy. I plan to look for the cheapest range-tier round that will still be functional, I plan to carry that as well once I get my license.. I just need to figure out which one to buy.. theres so many different opinions online/youtube. thanks for reply sir.

I double checked, and to my un-trained eye, I didn't see any wear in the areas you mentioned. And yea, glad you mentioned to check under the foam, I already checked there but I made sure to double check just in case. Nothing there, Only got the manual and lock. I guess I will have to call the gunshop. Thanks for reply sir.

Hmm, well looks like I will have to call the shop and inquire about my brush/rod. Somewhat disappointing that it was not included. Oh well, I need to figure out a decent cheap range ammo without ejection/feed issues which I hear are common anyway. Thanks for reply sir.

Good luck. .380 tends to be significantly more expensive than 9mm. Because of that, I added .380 to my reloading bench after acquiring a few .380 pistols (including a Glock 42).

Your best bet will be to buy bulk (1000 round cases).

Well I am sure you are correct in that it makes no difference, but if I have the choice of buying it brand new from factory, rather than buying it from a shop advertised as new but it really was used by others.. I'd rather buy it new even if it meant paying exorbitant shipping, just a matter of principle for me and it's probably silly. Appreciate your reply sir.

Yea, I was braced for that reality before purchasing, but the slightly smaller size of the 42 vs 43 is worth it to me. I just need to find out which brand is cheapest and is consistent for the range, still scouring youtube for ammo reviews that are recent, as I know the 42 has had slight changes since its release half a decade ago. thanks for reply.

I'm looking at the closeup of the slide release. I have a newer Glock 19 and the slide release looks exactly like that (worn) but I know the firearms was shipped direct and it is new. Some stainless parts (slide release) are not blued or parkerized but have a for lack of a better word, stain put on them that wears off after a couple of handlings.

I like Glocks and accept their limitations. They're reliable because they are simple. They're a cost effective mass produced consumer item and I'd expect a few shortfalls in the finish department. The barrel, slide are finished well. If the finish wears off the slide release, so be it, it doesn't detract from the important qualities of the firearm. Price point wise, Glocks are right on. The old Sig 220, 229, 239s were all finished well from end to end, but you paid a lot extra for the better durable finish on those items.

Per chance if the firearms was in the shop for awhile and shown/handled by a bunch of people with greasy-sweaty hands I could see the finish on a new handgun wearing off having never been shot (Glocks.)

I'm okay with it not being perfect, I just wanted to make sure I was getting what I paid for, sounds like I did (other than the freakin cleaning stuff lol). I bought a brand new never fired(save for at the factory proofing) and the slide lock looks worn as well.

I bought a used glock 30 and the thing seemed alsmost brand new with no worn looking parts.

What @Deplorable Me states about cost effectiveness and mass produced is 100% on. Good carry guns especially for a reliable "knock around i don't care if it gets banged up pistol".

I'd buy a few different brands (50 at a time) and find what it feeds correctly before making the jump to a whole case of anything. If you buy a case and it feeds like hell, you've got to resell the case and start over.

I agree with you. My 42, although only slightly smaller than my 43, is significantly more "pocketable."

I have one of the 2nd or 3rd iterations of the 42...from just after they were having real issues. I haven't had any issues getting it to feed anything. Even my reloads work fine (mostly 100gr RNFP) for practice. My wife puts hundreds of these through her P238 and 42 at a practice session.

Yes! I am very excited to finally shoot it. But I know I have to do it by the book, I plan to get a hold of a cleaning kit today, watch a tut on how to do it properly, go to the range and squeeze a few! and buy ammo! thx for reply.

Thats a good idea, I was probably going to swing by walmart today because I hear they have winchester 380 that works well.. supposedly. I will get a small box and also check a few shops I think. thanks for your reply.

Wow nice collection. And it really is amazing how that small difference makes an impact, you really wouldnt think it would. But I guess the smaller they get, the more and more noticeable the small differences become. I personally really like how the 42 feels in the hand, its like a negative mold glove lol, also the balance just feels amazing, really feels like a tool meant to be good for mobility but also not feel like a little breakable pea shooter.. best way i can describe it with my limited experience lol. thank you for reply sir.

If you got one of the newest in the production runs I highly doubt you'll have any issue with ANY ammo. But like @thewheels has said it would be best to buy 50 at a time just to be sure. Have fun!

I concur, looks new. Wear at the front edge of the barrel hood would be a dead give away, absent that definitely new.

FYI your new Glock comes lubricated (copper substance inside the slide). This helps with the break-in. You do not want to clean it until you put about 500 rounds through it.

Whatever you do, don't touch that copper substance. It's a bear to get off your skin and clothes.
