It should be treated just the same as forgetting to remove a pocket knife, screwdriver, leatherman, or nail file from your carry on. But because it’s a gun...

And since we are conditioned to think that some guns are legally owned via government permission and others aren’t, it’s okay for the charge to stick because the government didn’t give you permission in the first place.

Airlines are privately owned. They can ban whatever they want on their aircraft, regardless of the fact that functionally the ban probably comes from the government.

I drive everywhere for this reason. Flying is an immense tradeoff of rights, comfort, control, options, etc that I do not choose to subject myself to except when absolutely necessary.

They generally travel on their own private aircraft and their armed bodyguard entourage rides in coach behind them.

Here's a thought: why not treat it the same as we do bags like when we get to the gate, and they say "Sorry, but that bag will have to be checked through to your destination", and they take it, tag it, and throw it in the luggage hold of the airplane for you to pick up at baggage claim at your destination.

So, if you get to TSA and have a legal firearm in the bag you mistakenly have in your carry on, why not allow them to just check it to your destination, instead of putting you through a shitstorm? Maybe have the TSA sell you a $25 hard gun case for $100 to put it in as well. Or, maybe hold it in an airport secure storage facility until you return. Kind of like a locker at the amusement park pool, only a bit more secure. (Remember the good old days when we had airport rental lockers you could use to put something in last minute if you didn't want to fly with it? I do!).

But the $10K civil fine stuff and arrests is nuts.

What a crime, $4,100 fine because she was so comfortable carrying it was second nature. article says 5% increase in gun discoveries at check points. I like hearing that number. More people that carry the better it looks.

So, if I was a billionaire and wanted to start an airline that allowed armed passengers, which airports could I fly out of ?

What if it wasn't so drastic as flying with guns, what if an airline just wanted to let people bring their shampoo in full sized bottles ? They can't, that stuff is all dictated by powers even higher than the feds.

These are international rules that all airlines have to follow if they want service at any major airport anywhere in the world.

It is always at the discretion of the pilot. Aviation rules say that person is in absolute authority of the aircraft. Pilot says no go you are disarming or walking.

Agree with many posts that if found at checkpoint you should have the option to rectify the situation, for legally carried firearms. It is not a crime or should not be one until after you have passed the checkpoint and are then in a secure area.
