Edc ammo rotation?

When i go out to the range for practice i swap the mag from self defense rounds to target ammo due to cost. This mag in particular i have carried for about 5/6 months with Hornady critical rounds.

Question/s?

How long should one wait to rotate your edc ammo?

I also noticed the casing and the bullet on the round i have been chambering and un-chambering for that time has vertical and horizontal strikes on the fore end.
Normal?

There is a school of thought that says you should discard any round from the defensive carry rotation once it has been ejected from the action. I have jeard it suggested that you place such rounds into a jar or somesuch to become range/practice ammo.

I don't know that I'd go that far.. but if you're ejecting/chambering rounds over and over, you can in fact cause the bullet to 'compress' into the cartridge, potentially increasing pressure. I definitely wouldn't keep reusing the ejected round too often. I'm not sure I have a set schedule, but probably no more than 4-5 times before replacing that round. Probably once a year I do a mag dump and start fresh.

Slightly less concerned with rim on pistol. More concerned with AR lightly denting primer upon chambering. This has resulted in causing FTF apparently.

Ah. Dimpled primers always creep me out. Never been a fan of floating firing pins.

Well, I carry that same ammo in 9mm, and I eject the shit out of all of them over a similar period, maybe 6 months. They all look the same. The important aspect of it, is that they chamber and fire 100% even with all the dings, scratches and scuffs. After about 6 months I'll blow through the mag inside the frame and the extra magazine and buy a new box. I've taken this to the extreme ejecting followed by chambering the same rounds many times over. Never had any issues. That Hornady is very high quality ammo too.

I never have any scratches on my ammo from ejecting it out. Mine all look the same and brand new. I'm surprised by it. I had some older brass cases stuff and it was fine.

Just an FYI and I don't recommend it, but my dad gave me his old 9mm with self defense ammo in it and he hasn't carried it in 10-15 years. Never swapped ammo and just left it in his basement or dresser drawer. I shot it and no failure to fire. I do see the 6 month rotation making sense though.

I trust my carry gun with my life every single day. I know what it's capabilities are and it should be robust and able to handle what I have it for. I have a 100% functionality rate with both the ammo and the gun. Reliability and consistency are WAY more reassuring than the unknown. I've used very butchered up critical defense ammo to test the chambering in new magazines for other guns, again with 100% function. The bullet shape chambers easily and reliably for me all the time. The nicks and scratches have never had any effect on anything. The copper on mine are much more oxidized too. I'll continue to go along with my routine happily.

Same here, I have ejected and Re-chambered the the same rounds 25-30 times in my Kahr And can’t say I have ever had an issue. And my Kahr definitely has a very steep loading ramp.

A good quality round isn’t going to change its length or seat dimensions that easily. I couldn’t care less about scratches on the casing either. If my weapon places such noticeable markings on the casings or changes the dimensions of the round, I would check to see if the weapon needs to be looked at.

Easy, buy an extra box of defense ammo and everytime you remove a round from the chamber for practice make sure it is fired as the last round of the day.

When you load up for carry, the chambered round is the first time it has been in the tube. Didn't wild Bill Hickok unload and reload his six shooters everynight? His theory was a man deserves to be shot with a fresh round.

I understand cost, but when I go to the range, my carry mag is emptied (at target) regardless of cost.

1. I want to be able to predict how my SD rounds are going to perform.

I have enough SD rounds and target on hand that it doesn't really matter. And quite frankly, my SD rounds are always "hot" so I want to be able to practice with them and know how they'll strike (poi). Predictability is important to me. I do this with all my firearms, I'm not going to practice with only range ammo. That doesn't mean I only use SD ammo at the range, lol, I'm not that loaded $$$ (pun intended)!

The critical defense or duty rounds are designed to avoid bullet setback. Not all rounds are.

Good self defense rounds should be fine for many years for most CCW carry. Heck, my duty belt exposed the magazines and gun to the weather than most CCW carriers and the rounds were still good after a long time. Just inspect the rounds especially if you had ejected them. And rotate the ejected round, so that one round isn’t ejected over and over.

I would say at least once a year to be safe.
