Seems they are backing off a bit and instead of 2030 it’s now 2032 for 67% of vehicles being EV. They are also embracing hybrid car sales. I want neither and I’ll stick with gasoline. I’ll be buying a new truck in 3-5 years so should be good timing for me.

Not at all ironic, its a losing proposition. Rental cars are traditionally abused by the users. How long is that $15k or more battery gonna last? Any profit goes out the window with the first change. Tires are another big problem for EV's, they wear out fast. They are working on a tougher tire to take the weight of an EV, imagine how much they are gonna cost. EV's are a stupid idea,made by stupid people in a panic to avert a stupid, exagerated climate issue.

To be fair hertz is dumping teslas because they are costly to repair and service. They are keeping GM EVs and plan to buy more from what I read. Renting an EV makes no sense to me for traveling.

I read that they were dumping them because of the maintenance expense and the fact that few people want to rent them, who wants to rent a car for a week and spend that much time finding a charging station and then waiting hours for it to charge.

Hertz would have to charge the cars at public chargers after they were returned. The didn't have the capacity at most of their locations to charge them on site.

Most of the locations probably couldn't even have that added. There isn't capacity in the grid to do it.

And when someone said "we need to add chargers to our locations if we're doing this", and they looked into what that would take, you'd think someone would have said "we can't do that, better scrap the whole idea".

EVs merely shift the burning of hydrocarbons from the point of use to the point of the electricity generation. Just a massive ruse.

They could then create a cottage industry of Battery Swap sites, like a gas station, where you drive up, and the battery is swapped in minutes, and you drive off! The battery, from the vehicle owner perspective, would never be an issue as these sites would recharge them, maintain them, replace them when faulty or old. This would also allow for Legislation on what to do with the damned things when they age, or, recycling...

Only one EV manufacturer had ventured Dow that road but it didn't work out. Not sure why because again, IMO it would have allowed the EV's to catch on better. Just drive up, a pull through type service station with a pit, stop, turn off car, go get a coffee or use the bathroom, come back in 10 mins and you're good to go! What could be so wrong with that?

As a matter of fact, once the self driving cars are approved, you car would go off in the middle of the night, drive itself to a service station and get its battery changed while you sleep...

It was in the one article I read and posted but can’t find it. Maybe it was a pr stunt since everything I see now says ice vehicles. Also since then hybrid have come on string and GM is cutting back on EV’s and is no longer going to make the cheaper one they planned on with Honda I believe. Things change fast I guess. I’m all for replacing them with ice vehicles.

I just spoke with someone who wants to expand their business and they were told they have to wait u til 2025 when the grid is getting upgraded due to lack of power in the area. Its a campground so can’t just move locations either.

So this is a great idea in theory but it doesn’t really work in practice. There’s a lot that goes into replacing that battery and if that battery hits or impacts something and is damaged that $20,000 battery is trash. The replacement rate of batteries would be insane due to the moron on the lift damaging it. The time would be crazy to do this as most if not all batteries are located on the vehicle chassis because of the weight and the protection the battery needs. You’d essentially have to lift the top of the vehicle off every time and disconnect tons of vehicle plugs and grounds to do this. Those plugs aren’t designed to be removed many times and then would become a failure point. This was talked about but I do not ever see it happening.
This also opens up the manufacture for liability if they own the batteries and don’t maintain them. If someone gets hurt they will get sued. Then what happens if the battery is damaged in an accident or car theft? What if the car insurance lapses.

The weight and size is the issue. If it were as small and light as a normal battery put in an ICE it would be a no brainer. But we're not and probably never will get the batteries down to that size with the same mileage. Here's another idea though. Probably just as feasible.

It boils down to the manufacturer never designed or intended on the battery being quick changed. Electric forklifts have had had this forever, drive up, slide the battery out, slide a fresh one in and keep on working.
