Erie Permit Timelines redux

Just curious what their attitude was when you called. I've been advised not to call at all because sometimes they get in a twist over a simple inquiry and bury your app. I probably won't call, but it would be nice to know it's status since I'm only a couple weeks behind you - submitted early August 2016.

I’ve called a bunch of times before I finally got mine. They were always extremely pleasant and their guesses on time it would take were spot on. For me was 18 months

Interesting turn of events, since last week or the week before when I called the PPO regarding the status of my upgrade and they told me they lost it and i'd have to resubmit and the wait time is now 8 months.
I was really upset but low and behold I come home today from work and see a letter from the Clerks Office and it was my letter saying I have been upgraded to unrestricted. Very happy it was approved but even happier I don't need to resubmit my information.
Would like to thank FYWNY for all of his help and his classes which were great. For anyone concerned about submitting for upgrade before a full year I only waited 4 months before submitting.

My letter from the Erie PPO arrived in the mail Thursday 12/07/17 - Pearl Harbor Day.
Here's my timeline: (note: I live in Marilla so my interviews were handled by the Erie County Sheriff's Dept.)

I am not sure when they changed their procedure, but you receive a letter only on the mail, not your permit. You get your permit (the plastic card) when you put the first handgun on it. But take the letter with you to the gun stores - with that (at least the two places I went) they will let you actually touch the merchandise.

I am not sure when they changed their procedure, but you receive a letter only on the mail, not your permit. You get your permit (the plastic card) when you put the first handgun on it. I don't see that things have changed much at the PPO over the last several years in terms of the speed at which they process permits. Recently, I saw a friends permit, and based on the numbers of each of our permits, the Erie County PPO is basically on track to process about 10 permits per day. Actually, they are on the order of about 2,400 per year. Considering there are about 250 working days per year, that would be just a bit under 10 per day.
Of course, they do handle other details, like suspensions, revocations, and the constant flow of changes to permits as people add or remove pistols from their permits.
But when you realize that there are at least 6 full time clerks working there, it basically means that they are processing 1.6 permits PER CLERK PER DAY.
Think about that: in an 8 hour workday, each clerk manages to approve a whopping 1.6 permits!!! OMG, I think that workload would kill many of us, LOL! Anyway, I am willing to give the benefit of the doubt to the clerks there, because I don't know how anyone could possibly work to that pace day in, day out, year after year without going crazy. IT HAS TO BE that the procedures are so slow, and utterly convoluted, and the equipment so completely outdated that they can only achieve the granting of 1.6 permits per clerk per day.
So, here is a thought for when Mickey Kearns takes over as the new County Clerk: you wanted the job, - NOW FIX IT!

I did request unrestricted but was denied. I guess i didn't have a good enough reason. Looks like i'm forced to take the intro to conceal carry. Any knowledge on this course?

That sucks. I haven't taken it yet, but when I do, it'll be with FTWNY. Heard nothing but good things about them. Also wouldn't hurt to take the NRA intro to pistol shooting course.

So that was an upgrade letter I assume. How long did you have your permit before you applied to have the restrictions removed?

I waited 4 months and received unrestricted.
A little over five years.
Well, I figured it was only a matter of time before Erie County followed the example set by some of the other counties here in NY, and now they have.
While their present processing times are between 12-18 months, this bullshit of now making you wait for an “appointment” to even submit your application will only further delay CCW applicants.
It is infuriating when you realize how they are flat out delaying your rights.
See my post #194 above. I point out that staffing levels at the PPO do not seem to be the root of the problem.
The process is the problem. How many people have been told countless lies about what is delaying their applications? One lie that I find particularly distasteful, is the one about apps being held up by the judge for months on end. I happen to know a bit about that, and how that excuse by the PPO is utter crap! Judge Boller is being badly maligned with those lies.
Maybe the judge needs to begin sending out letters directly to the applicants when he has processed their applications so that people can begin to see where the delays truly are. He should probably be stamping the file paperwork as well with the date received by his office, and the date returned to the PPO.
The letter could read something like this:
Dear (applicant):
I received your CCW application from the Erie County PPO on (date), and have reviewed your file. As of this date, (xx/you/zzzz) I have reviewed it and made my decision to approve ( ) or deny ( ) it, and have returned your file to the PPO for them to formally notify you. If you do not receive notification promptly, you should contact them at...
Sincerely yours, ...
Maybe then, people can get a clear view of the bullshit going on.
If the PPO were properly run, they would institute a clear and online system that applicants could access while their applications are pending that would show them exactly where along the process they are. Then people might stop calling the office as much trying to get an update.
Here is a hint for Clerk Mickey Kearns: go online and see how Florida does it. Their application process provides every applicant with a unique tracking number that allows the applicant to go online 24/7 and see exactly where their app is in the process.You might learn something...

That was me. I ended up receiving my upgrade in the mail about a week later.
I got my finger prints done June 2017.
I've literally heard nothing since then. None of my references have been contacted yet either.
Should I start calling the office to check up on my status if anything is happening?

Hmm. It took West Seneca thirteen months to contact me. I think I did call after eight months and it was no help. I ebbed up calling the wspd, and they said I should hear something in the next week or two. Equally unhelpful since it took them another five months to contact anyone.
Update, I've now met the town investigating detective and had an interview with him. I will admit it was a very smooth process and he was a good guy. Honestly so far through this process it was the most enjoyable part by far. I have nothing but good to say about the local police department and how I was treated.
Now my references are completing their notarized statements about my character then it's all off to the judge . I'm hoping to have all 4 of them get their statements notarized within a week.
