My grandfather and his brother's were Catholics born and raised near Belfast , Northern Ireland around 1900. My Grandfather Patricks's favorite brother Hugh joined the British Army. All the brothers burned Hugh's uniform when he came home on leave. He could not go back to the British Army without his uniform and so he became a deserter. My Grandfather went to sea at 14 and jumped ship sometime during WW1 in Canada and made his way to NYC and became a carpenter. He married my grandmother and they lived in Hell's Kitchen.
My father's older brother was named after his father Patrick. My grandfather wanted to name my father after his favorite brother. My grandmother Cathrine, also from Ireland said,
NO!, "Eventually they will mistake him for your brother and They will come for him in the middle of the night!"
