Ever find anything strange in the woods?

The strangest thing I ever found in the woods was...not found in the woods.
I was at a DEC campsite (pretending to be "woods", but not quite), and near the campfire ring I found a fired, broadhead arrow.
Either someone dropped this VERY hard, or someone did not like the previous camper in my site.

It's not super strange, but I was walking in a part the middle of the day and this guy was screwing his fat girlfriend. I'll never forget the fat wiggling. Yuck.
A few years ago I found a 12 inch diameter American chestnut tree on my property.it was the largest of three known wild American chestnuts(burr producing) growing in nys. Now its the only one,according to the American chestnut association.but it now has the blight and wont last much longer.sad really

I also found this out in the woods, in the same state forest where I found that rock used for a target, but several years before, I added the 22 LR round for scale of the obvious bullet hole. I also should note, that at least 6 months before I went back to look around again and found the skull, I had found the carcass of the dog. It was sad to think someone took it out there and blasted it then left it; although at the time I first found the carcass, I did not know what had killed it. It was only when I went back and found the skull with the bullet hole that I found out someone had shot it:
Found one this year, no blight yet. Took a pic of some of the burs, there was still a few nuts around on the ground.

No idea what it was, but it was brown, about a foot and a half in diameter, standing vertically. It split in to many paths as you got higher. It had these odd green bits at the end of those splits. And I mean millions of these green things. I tried to take a core sample and it was just a sticky, syrupy substance that came out. I looked yonder and saw thousands of these things. It really freaked me out.

You should contact the American chestnut associations NY chapter.they have tons of info.its good to be on their mailing list.might get blight free American chestnuts some day.they are close.that is definitely a rare find you have there.unless its Chinese chestnut.how far up is the split in the trunk?Found one this year, no blight yet. Took a pic of some of the burs, there was still a few nuts around on the ground.

I've been watching American Chestnuts for years in the Genesee Valley area. They usually start to bear the burrs before the blight gets them, but get them it does. The biggest one I had been watching was easily 16"-18" diameter before it was infected about ten years ago, many got to a foot in diameter before succumbing to that ugly disease. They keep coming up though and eventually a generation will have developed a resistance to the blight, even without the help of man. There was a newspaper article many many years ago about a huge, lone, old growth, tree still bearing nuts, in the valley. The exact location was not provided, I guess to keep people from inadvertently bringing the blight into this somewhat isolated area, don't know if its still there.

Ran across a house in the middle of the woods once. Creepy placement. It was on a plot I knew was owned property because it had a "driveway" that was a mile long but nothing more than grass and ruts. Never knew that someone built anything out there. Used to go there to break windows and smoke cigarettes, lol.

How about in the water? -- Mid-sixties, in high school, three friends who are divers wanted to do some diving at Sackett's Harbor. There was an undeveloped area near some cliffs over looking the harbor where they liked to dive & explore. Hauling the diving gear to the edge of the water, we look down, and in about six feet of water, at the base of the cliffs, is a safe, about 3' by 3' , and it looked new -with bubbles still coming out of it. We look down in amazement, and within 30 seconds, while discussing where to go to call the local authorities, ( no cell phones back then) - 5 police cars , - Sheriff's, State Police, come screming up the road to stop where we were parked nearby, -- " Oh, hell, we're going to the big house", was our first reaction.' Police get out and come runnng acroos the field towards us, - not good! -- A few minutes questioning and talking to them and all was cool, - they had received an anonymous tip on where the safe was dumped, -- from a local robbery that had just occured the night before. We hung around until a wrecker was summoned and they winched the safe out of the water, it was partially pryed open - enough to see a few gold coins trickle out thru the crack along the door. As close as I'll ever come to finding buried treasure.

She was pretty fat and her bf as was jiggling. My wife and I were walking with our son. I think he was about 3 or 4. No pictures wanted.

Violin playing can be explained....or banjo playing. Many years ago, a good friend took a job as a timber cruiser after graduating forestry school. He would be in the woods, every day, estimating timber yields for people contemplating logging ops. He wa a banjo player, and always took his banjo with him. He would walk thru the woods, making note of the timber yield and playing the banjo all of the time while doing so. He loved that he got 8 to 10 hours practice in a day, -- while getting well paid to do so....and that's where the music in the woods may come from. He DID became a great banjo player.
