Quite possible. Some people don't know how to or that they can say no. My guess though is that since they were following him they yanked him out and started searching. Can't say without being there

The surveillance team followed as Martin drove his black Ford Excursion alone from Pennsylvania through New Jersey and into the city along Interstate 95.

New York State Police pulled Martin over on the Belt Parkway in Howard Beach and found the parts and ammunition purchased at the gun show along with brass knuckles, according to the Queens DA’s office.

Ok. What if he wasn't planning on stopping anywhere in NY? It's legal to transport through the state and these asshats know it. My mother lives in VT. If I buy something NY considers illegal in PA and then drive to her house with it without stopping in NY It's legal. If they pull me over in NY just because I bought something they don't like It's an illegal stop. If i broke a traffic law and they pulled me over I still have the right to continue to my destination in VT without being arrested.

I had that same thought.

I have a feeling a good lawyer could get the charges dropped pretty easily due to this.

The catch is that he was on Long Island when he was pulled over, so he wasn't exactly traveling through the state.

Howard Beach is in NYC (Queens Borough, just west of JFK Airport). If they had an open case against him for selling to others or for possession of outlawed stuff and illegal, then I have nothing to say. Regarding the comment on running the plate, they do not "run" anything. They just note what state your car is registered in and observe. I know for a fact that they are there observing the out of state drivers, observing the purchase and then following them if the purchases seem "excessive". From some reports, he may have been heading home to his house on LI. If that is the case, he may get off due to the 'interstate travel' rules but then again, there is the issue of those pesky 'prohibited magazines'. I for one, would love to see this go to court in NYS regarding possession of 80% receivers by a person who is able to apparently possess an AR-15 (from the photos of the lowers). Also, brass knuckles are prohibited statewide.

It's a totalitarian regime that has existed for many years going back to the 1970's that started with fireworks which were freely available for purchase. Semi-auto shotgun, illegal in NYC without a permit and illegal in NYS with those 'unsafe' features. 10+ round magazines, illegal, etc. He just got greedy and got caught. If he had intent to re-sell this stuff without going through a FFL, then that is a whole different level.

Are we just going to ignore that NYC PD FOLLOWED him to PA, followed him around the show, followed him BACK to NY, and pulled him over (Probably for a "broken tail light") and charged him? That's some next level sketchy shit.

They didn’t follow him there. I’d be willing to bet they drive through the lot of the gun show and made note of NY plates. This has been done before. Next time park a few miles away and Uber to the show.

So I guess they were already on to him. They do use the practice I described though and a good way to avoid it is to do what I said and spend $10 on an Uber.
