I'vre been doing weights for over 20 years. I never had injuries from them including some of the powerlifting stuff. Maybe a decade ago I felt the potential for shoulder problems from bench press and stopped.Just wrapping up another workout.
Set a new deadlifting pr (not counting what i did in my younger years) for my 40s. Using a 6' stiff bar, loaded with 250lb of short plates (means going deeper and harder to lift) i repped out one set for 10, and another for 8. This was at the end of my workout, and i pre exhaust my legs before doing 6 sets of dead lifts.
Still cant work upper body due to a bout of bicep tendonitis (effects the shoulder) thats been flared up for several months now, but been doing a deadlift day, squat day and ab day. All days start with 15-20 min on the treadmill, and i pre exhaust my dl and sq days with 100 reps on leg extensions and leg curls before doing my real work.
This thread is going for almost 3 years, and while i always had injuries, its never been as bad as the past few years.. oh well, age catches us all.
After all, if I had to walk home 50 miles from the city in a shtf scenario I better be reasonably fit. And if I need to physically fight for my life I also need.
Couple democrats ought to do, teller BYOB!I'm looking to start setting up a home gym in my basement.
I think I want to start with dumbbells and a bench.
What type of set up do you guys have or what works well for you?

Ive got bands and some k bells i use as part of my training.Just finished a nice 3 mile run and core workout.
@Drinkthekoolaid look at the rubber bands. You can do basically everything with them. And kettle bells. If I didn’t have a gym at work, that’s what I would have at home.

Just this week i got back to it after about 3 months off to rest my shoulder. I lost about 10lbs of muscle as im now 210lbs.. it sucks, but it will come back reasonably quick. My shoulder is still a little off. Its a pain in the right front delt muscle when i do any pressing movements. So, like before, ill avoid those movements and do what i can.

I started with an adjustable bench, and adjustable dumbbells. That was 23 years ago when i got tired of commercial gyms.I'm looking to start setting up a home gym in my basement.

I don’t know where I pulled that one out of. That’s my longest run since the Army. I ate and drank a lot this weekend too.
I've run 7 or 8 marathons and qualified for the Boston Marathon twice. Present my best time is 3hrs, 27minI’m hoping to run the NYC marathon in November. It’s been a goal of mine for years. Gotta do it before I am too old.

That's my problem right there. I work nights and there is a tendency to eat whenever and whatever. Trips to the vending machine, ordering pizza, etc. Not good. I can tell and feel that my health has gone down. It didnt help much when my youngest daughter passed in Dec of 2018 and I really gave up even trying to eat healthy or be active. I'm starting to regain some motivation now and have been working on cutting out junk from my diet. I'm kinda doing a intermittent fast where I eat a breakfast after I get home in the morning and then again after I get up in the evening. More or less only eating with the family and that's it. At work, I drink water when I feel hungry. I've also cut out the soda and have been trying to take stairs whenever possible ( not always possible as I'm often pushing a toolbox). So far I'm feeling a bit more energetic and am not really missing out on the extra meals I would eat. Usually breakfast is 3/4 oatmeal with a small spoonful of brown sugar and a banana. Dinner is whatever the rest of the family is having. I would like to try and find time to actually exercise, but having a family with a 5 and 7 year old is kind of time consuming.

Tomorrow I’m going to do 3, then do legs and back. My goal next week is 10 miles on Thursday.

A few different sized kettle balls.
I would start with a pullup bar, dip station and some dumbbells or kettlebells to do squats.

It all depends on your budget, your goals, and your health.
