The bag she is using weighs 28lbs EMPTY. It is NOT an option unless it's also your luggage which also seems inappropriate since 28lbs is more than half your weight allowance and you haven't even put anything in it.

Flew from LGA to MIA today, I am not typing this from jail. Nobody gave me any trouble. As soon as they said gun 3 officers showed up within 10 minutes to inspect and take down my info. Didn't even look at the firearms.

Well just home from a short vacation to another country , on the way to the air port in the limo ,I found 2 loose rounds in my carry on that i used on a previous trip to a match in pine city ny that did not involve flying, i left the 2 rounds in the seat in the limo, that could of been a major problem had that showed up in a metal detector

Made it back from Florida. Also not in jail. Check-in was smooth at Florida and picked up my luggage at LGA with like normal. Then I ran to the parking lot and came back to Westchester.

The experience varies. Sometimes the PAPD officers check the actual guns, other times they only do a very cursory inspection. It has taken me as little as 10min wait at LGA to as much as 35min. I am now avoiding travel out of LGA due to the reconstruction there. My last experiences was like getting on a commuter train in Mumbai.
One thing to note - if already mentioned, sorry. Airlines also have their own rules on where/how ammo may be transported. Some require ammo in a separate case. The max amount of ammo per federal regs is 11lbs.

I read through this thread and wanted to provide my personal experience. I departed from LGA on Sunday, flying inn Delta to Dallas. Prior to heading to the airport I called PAPD and spoke with a desk officer about the rules. It went down the way he said it would. I arrived, declared the pistol to the Delta agent. She said it was her first time doing this so she nicely summoned her supervisor. He called the PAPD. Two officers arrived within five minutes (busy day too- end of Thanksgiving holiday weekend). One stayed with me and the other went to care for other business. The officer was incredibly nice and professional. She said she does this all day. She filled out a short report, looked at my New York (Westchester County issued) permit, and verified the serial number. Delta handed me a card that the officer signed to put in the pistol case. Then a baggage handler escorted me and the officer down to baggage claim to give the bag to TSA and wait for an ‘all clear’. The officer explained that sometimes they send it down the carousel and call down describing the bag and wait for the all clear — but that could take longer. Once TSA came out they said ‘you’re good’ and I headed off to security. Maybe 15-20 minutes total. Again, the officer was incredibly nice and professional. She said the issues occur when travelers don’t have New York permits, when the pistol isn’t on the permit, or when it isn’t locked appropriately. I should say that I packed it with the action open, magazines empty in the same case. I did not travel with ammo. At DFW the bag was sent to a special area. Quick ID check and I was on my way. Delta did zip tie the bag. On return, the Delta DFW agent handed me the orange verification card to sign. No inspection at all. When I landed I went to the baggage office at LGA. I was one of the first off the plane and my bag was already there. That agent put a small Zip tie on the bag, checked my ID, and that’s it. Very very simple. I was more stressed having read this thread and other articles. That being said, be sure to leave extra time checking in at LGA. I hope that was helpful.

How exactly did you manage to fly through LGA when the upstate permits do not apply to Manhattan and the five burroughs?

I asked PAPD explicitly prior to leaving for the airport. They responded that as long as the pistol remained locked and I was consistently in transit then it would be fine. So, don’t stop and stay at a hotel or dine in the city. Drive down, present the bag, go through security.

This is Port Authority. I also asked a friend who is with NYPD and he just laughed. He said nobody is going to give you a hard time for following the law. And then he proceeded to complain about the city’s draconian laws.

I've never flown with my pistols, yet. Does the ammo have the be locked with the firearms, or can it just be in a clear box like that (the box itself not having a lock) and just placed in the suitcase?

They do if they can get away with it. But in February 2005, the US Department of justice issued a clarification regarding 18 USC 926A. This was done specifically in response to law-enforcement at NYC-area airports (read PAPD) not complying with those particular laws.
When I fly with firearms in my checked bags, I carry copies of this letter on my person, in my baggage, and inside the case that contains my firearms. It states specifically that changing modes of transit (taking the bag out of the car and walking into the terminal and then the counter with it) is permissible as long as you are constantly in transit.

I've flown with firearms a shit-ton in the last year between KBUF, KROC, KJFJ, KLGA, KBOS, KATL, KSLC, and KSEA. My regular route (several times a month) is KBUF>KBOS and back. Only once have I ever had a hard time, at that was with a Port Authority cop at KBUF.
Know the regs. Know the airline rules. Be prepared for a misinformed employee to occasionally throw you a curveball. Make sure you leave enough time. And above all, BE POLITE.

As I stated above, I have all of the rules and regulations,of TSA , The Air Line I am traveling with , And the federal regulations for travel with a fire arm. along with copies of the CCW Licence or the resoprocity agreement showing I am legal to have a firearm in my final destination .All in a neat little folder in my suit case next to my gun case. I have never needed it yet ,But just in case I do its at my fingertips. My daughter recently visited us from College in Al, She wanted to bring back to school one of her 22's We cased it up, She declared it and the only new rule she had to follow was that her bag would not be on the carousel it would be in an office next to the carousel, She went in ,the allowed her to open the suit case to confirm the case was still inside, they then ZIP TIED her suit case so she could not retrieve her fire arm in the airport. and off she went. Incase I did not mention above, I never let go of my ID until they look at my face and I am able to tell them I am declaring a firearm,
