New York Moose Study

As part of a multi-year collaborative research project to better understand New York’s moose population (NY Moose Study), DEC wildlife staff recently completed the fifth annual aerial survey of moose in the Adirondack Park. In 42 hours of helicopter flight time, staff observed 83 moose or groups of moose, all of which appeared healthy. Staff recorded the location, number of animals, the age and sex of each animal, and noted general habitat characteristics for each moose sighted. Data from these surveys will refine our estimate the moose population in the Adirondacks and will ultimately help inform a future moose management plan.

There have been a couple of moose sightings near me in Columbia county.My UPS guy showed me a pic of a moose he saw about 2 miles from me.Girl from a deli here had a pic of a moose near where the UPS guy saw it too.

Went on a bear hunt in Canada years ago.Most of the lunch and dinners we ate had moose.Absolutely the best meat I ever tasted.We had moose burgers,moose roast,moose steak even moose lasgna all of it was outta this world.

our summers are too warm here to ever have moose numbers grow much beyond what we now have.. Moose can't handle heat, f$%ks with their brains..
A trip to hunt moose in Newfoundland is on my bucket list.. Had a customer give me some steaks n sausage a few years back,, good eating !!

My BIL is a logger and sees them regularly on his way to work about 15 miles west of The 'Hood where the intersection of State Rt. 3 and the Route 56 goes north to Potsdam/Canton.

Been up here over 7 years, driven through that intersection over a 100 times and never saw one there, or anywhere else up here. I am offended that I haven't seen one.

They found dropped antlers on the top of a mountain down near me (basically the southern most extent of the Catskills) a few years back so they do wander out of the Adirondacks some. They think it was a juvenile that was seeking out new territory. But as @Bustedknees stated they need cold weather to thrive so I don't plan on having any major populations down here by me. Just have to settle for watching Rocky and Bullwinkle reruns.

If I remember correctly, a motorist hit one a few years ago around Garrison/Cold Spring.

We saw one last year while camping in Hoffman Notch near Schroon Lake. Saw numerous tracks. I reported the sighting on the DEC page.

I’m going back there in April.

An invasive specie of snail nematode, something they ingest grazing, gets in their brain and makes them whacky and they die. Whitetail deer filter them out in the brain blood barrier, moose and elk cannot, so the numbers will probably never get real big. Probably why reintroducing Elk will not happen.

I watched one swim over from VT about 10 years ago just south of the Crown Point bridge. It was heading right towards our dock then decided to veer off south for a quieter spot to land. Watching an animal that large swim was interesting.

We have moose all over our land in the ADK's . Occasionally you run into one in the woods.
