The task force of aircraft carrier, destroyers and other ships were regular Navy. The Marine general did indeed write his commands down on paper and the messengers rode motorcycles. The Marine general allowed the Navy to get close before opening fire. He sunk the carrier and a number of other ships. This was so embarrassing the results of the exercise were initially classified.

Folks when I was young the board game Risk was popular. I loved playing it. It did teach me about countries at the time I never heard about much in school. . While visiting friends in China . My Chinese girlfriend and my self attended a dinner at the friends home. A small gathering but there was folks from about 8 countries in attendance . A few worked at their respected embassies. . I knew where they were from largely from playing that board game. It was a very interesting evening to say the least. ... Hearing their life stories. We live a sheltered life. Some of these people could write a book .

Stupid is not the correct word... Ignorant is the word to use ... We have allowed communists to teach our children. Our school system for the most part is in shambles. Back in the day one had shop class, Home ec... We have men in college that cannot change a tire, Balance a checkbook. At times pretty sad.

I loved shop class and home ec... FWIW, over the pandemic I made new curtains for the house with the sewing machine and some fabric from JoAnn's.
A lot of women don't even know how to properly sew even a straight stitch, mend or alter a pair of slacks... etc.

The costs have risen at 4x the rate of inflation and the quality has plummeted ever since.

This was actually a significant point in the book "Do Hard Things," where they trace some of the problems with newer generations back to the shallow self-confidence movement of the 80s and 90s we did in schools.
The issue wasn't that self-confidence is bad; it's that we instilled the wrong confidence in children. We instilled fake confidence based on showmanship and outward approval (contingent self-worth) and wondered why when the millennial generation didn't get validation and trophies in the real world, it went to shit.
Millennials really got short-changed by a school system that taught them to focus on outward appearance and not help them set their own internal goals against their own performance. It didn't teach them how to better themselves; it just plopped standardized material and testing in front of them and taught them no life skills.

My 1st Ex was doing that to my son in the 1980s, when we lived in Kenya.
He still has an inability to see that much of what he believes is demonstrably false, because he's "over confident" and "wrongly confident".
One thing I did quash was her insisting that he, at age 14 and not being very strong, could drive our 4000+ pound Land Cruiser HJ-47 (no power steering) on the old washboard road going north from Isiolo.
It wasn't a particularly safe area either - Marsabit road of terror and death » Capital News .
This is the beast...American version, but near enough - there was a lot of extra heavy weight in it - extensively rebuilt interior, roof rack, heavy secured tool box and hi-lift jack, multiple 40 liter water carboys and 10, 12 or 14 ply Firestone Trans-Lug bias ply tires. Very hard ride, but no punctures from thorns. Radials were the first thing you ditched when you got a bush car.
This was the road in the 1980s - the pussies have paved it now...
There were only 2 ways to drive it (both in 4-wheel drive) - slow - about 20 mph, or man the fuck up, get it up to 55-60 mph and lock your arms into the steering wheel to control it, hoping you didn't hit a rut bad enough to snap the steering wheel around and break your arms.
You never drove in the bush with your thumbs wrapped around the steering wheel. I still don't do that to this day.

That looks like your normal West Texas lease road. We drove our trucks slow on them because if you broke down you would sit there a LONG time waiting for a service truck.
The environment was similar - essentially high altitude desert - wouldn't mind living in Marfa but, like Taos NM, it's gotten "artsy-fartsy". You can't even find an apartment in Marfa for less than $1500.
The Land Cruiser HJ-47 "Troopy" was an extremely durable vehicle - had a 4.0 liter, 6 cyl. Toyota 2H diesel - best "physical object" I've ever had.
It never puked up in the bush in almost 10 years of hard bush bashing.
Other than air and oil filters and oil, maintenance was pretty simple. Change tires and tubes when necessary, drain the fuel/water separator periodically and change out the spring/shackle bushings - occasionally needed a new shackle.
Used to change the bushings myself using a couple of hydraulic jacks. The springs were massive.
Died once in Nairobi - the fuel injection pump broke.

You can't teach someone who does not want to learn and lives in an environment that does not require it. I tend bar in a place where the newly hired college students, and college graduates, too, cannot make change from a $5 bill for a $3.50 beer without using a calculator. They never had to learn how.
My son just graduated college. Several of his professors told his classmates and him of a website where if you type in the question, it will give the answer, whether it be a Master's Thesis or the answer to 2+2. And it gives alternative, but correct essay answers so if 100 people have to do an essay question on the reasons for our Civil War, it will give 100 alternate, but correct essays. They don't want their students to think, or even remember information, they want them to be able to find the answer in a few seconds online.
We are truly screwed as a society and we have no one to blame but ourselves.

As I get older, I see new "milestones" in how people progress in life in maturity stages. The young are overconfident. As you age, you realize you're wrong a lot of the time, but you also see your time is limited -- so you start becoming more interested in finding solutions and less in being right or needing a confidence boost.
I'm not sure we all hit that stage simultaneously, though. Life has to beat you down before you get that common sense knocked into you. The hope is it doesn't beat you down enough that you don't make it -- sort of like a vaccine.

She basically had a meltdown. Could not, even with me trying to explain, the concept of giving me a quarter instead of handing me back the penny and giving me $0.24 AFTER USING A CALCULATOR!!!!
Shop class was the best. I took electric, wood, and drafting. At graduation from middle school they gave awards for science, math, language, etc. They also gave an award, unbeknownst to me, for Industrial Arts. They called my name. I was stunned.
Kids today are so damn clueless. I'm scared for my kids and grandkids. Seriously.

the mechanics ask me for help .. all the time .. i tell them what to do .,.
they do not do what i tell them to find the problem ..
i call them askholes
but when i stop helping them .. i get wrote up .. you were a mechanic .. you could help ..
to this day i keep telling the mechanics .. i can measure 12 volts with your DMM thru a snow cone i peed on ..
just because u have 12 volts .. you do not have the current needed

You are mistaking a statement about the average member for a statement about every member.
The same mistake people make when they object to statements like "men are stronger than women". That doesn't mean *every* man is stronger than *every* woman. But it does mean statistically the majority are.
Just because your cousin Helga the power lifer is stronger than Danny Devito doesn't invalidate the general statement.
I'm just saying the 70s were the last decade were traditional American values held sway. Our Nation exhibited outward signs of the lefist infection in the 60s but it took till the 80s for the rot to become preeminent.
