I understand what your saying.... Better safe than Sorry. I was talking to a NYC police officer down at the local gun shop and he was saying he doesn't think that someone would get arrested for non-compliance but then he thought about it a little more and said, he could see a few cops out there arrest someone for having a pistol grip because its a good arrest for them, and it will be great for the local news to say the Police stopped a dangerous man with a DANGEROUS ASSUALT RIFLE! Upstate NY, i don't think you have to worry as much since you can shoot on your own property or a friends, but down here on long island where you have to go to public shooting ranges I would NOT chance it.

Like i said in the video this is good on pistol caliber AR15's because you can't lock the magazine in and be able to top load with the take down pin pulled. Also, im gonna try this out on my precision AR with a B.A.D lever. Since I only shoot one round at a time and a normal setup with pistol grip and stock is a lot more comfortable and better for accuracy, in place of the thordsen i have on it now.

I understand what you are saying, but it's nice to have more options out there.

Bob sled is neat but doesn't help this situation at all. An unmodified AR could take the bob sled and be a single shot gun, but it's still actually a semi that can accept a detachable magazine by the press of a button. So, without permanently attaching the bobsled you gain nothing, and if you are going to permanently attach it you may as well permanently attach a real magazine so you can at least put 10 rounds in, keep weight down, and price down.

I still think a thordsen is the best way to go in NY.

I shot cosmetically non-compliant rifles at Calverton for 22 years. Nobody gives a fuck.

It does interrupt the cycling of the action. It is an option which would likely pass muster in court. Thought of it 2 years ago but ruled it out as it is not easily reversible like a fixed mag and well it really didn't fit my requirements.

Never said you didn't have to fix the Bob sled. Said if you want a single shot semi go with a Bob sled. The sleds main advantage over fixed 10 rounders is the ability to load longer than magazine length rounds for competition.

A full auto does all that and fires continuously while the trigger is depressed.

The ATF actual terminology for a "semi auto action" is "self loading action."

Apples and oranges. The full auto mechanism is the hammer sear and disconnector. You can buy a semi auto rifle without a tax stamp you cannot legally buy a full auto without one.

A M2 is capable of firing in full auto or single shot. If you permenently disable the full auto mechanism it is no longer a full automatic weapon. That is why you can buy civilian version of an M2. Even though it was originally designed to be a select fire machine gun they have been manufactured without the ability to fire full auto therefore they are legal to own without a tax stamp.

If you design or modify a self loading firearm to not have the ability to self load it is not a self loading firearm.

Not quite the sear, hammer and disconnector is what makes the full auto distinction. The sear is still going to be disconnected as long as you have your finger on the trigger. As I said previously it is apples and oranges.


The trigger mechanism on a lever action would be a fair compairison to a semi auto trigger mechanism.

My 17 Remington AR has no gas system is it a Semi auto? No, if I Put a full auto lower on it I would have a machine gun according to the ATF. That is why it is apples and oranges. The trigger, sear, and disconnector is what is considered the difference for Full Auto or machine gun.

M16 select fire lower = Machine gun
AR lower =/= Semi auto


The Brits have a version of an AR that is an intrupted semi auto it is legal for for them to own even though civilians are not allowed to own semi auto rifles. Their mechanism is much different though. It is a lever that replaces the safety switch and it cannot be disabled by holding it down. The bolt hold open as described in the OP would not have passed muster in the UK because you can defeat it by holding it down. The U.K. Is almost as oppressive as NY is.

The mechanism in the OP is a mechanical interruption of the firing and self loading sequence, it makes the system no longer semi automatic therefore it should not meet the legal definition of an assault weapon if it was configured with a pistol grip. However, a DA will argue that it can easily be defeated and does not pass muster in the spirit of the law. That was the main reason I did not Persuit this mechanism 2 years ago.

We have already witnessed break = brake in the spirit of the law in the PRNY.

Say you put a bump fire stock on your semi auto fixed mag, did you make a machine gun?
No you didn't because it still locks and the trigger has to be depressed to make it fire again.

I've seen it already at the range all you do is hold it down by using thumb and holding the mag well and it back to semi so I really dont see it will make muster as compliant. But who know with this shit law.
