With the massive price spikes of both many farmers are choosing to fallow some fields rather than risk getting caught with food that cost them more to produce than they can sell it for.

And thats no idle concern. Our current administration would think nothing of imposing price fixing that makes such a supply chain catastrophe worse.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine means the food inflation that’s been plaguing global consumers is now tipping into a full-blown crisis, potentially outstripping even the pandemic’s blow and pushing millions more into hunger.

Together, Russia and Ukraine account for a whopping portion of the world’s agricultural supplies, exporting so much wheat, corn, sunflower oil and other foods that it adds up to more than a tenth of all calories traded globally. Now, shipments from both countries have virtually dried up.

Commodity markets are soaring — wheat is up about 50% in two weeks and corn just touched a decade high. The surging costs could end up weighing on currencies in emerging markets, where food represents a bigger share of consumer-price baskets. And analysts are predicting export flows will continue to be disrupted for months even if the war were to end tomorrow.

The crisis extends beyond just the impact of grain exports (critical as they are). Russia is also a key supplier for fertilizers. Virtually every major crop in the world depends on inputs like potash and nitrogen, and without a steady stream, farmers will have a harder time growing everything from coffee to rice and soybeans.

“It’s an amazing food shock,” said Abdolreza Abbassian, an independent market analyst and a former senior economist at the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization. “I don’t know of a situation like this in the 30 years I was involved in this sector.”

The current crisis is going to make things worse, likely sending hunger to unprecedented levels as the conflict turns millions of people into refugees and sends food prices even higher.

Look at a majority of upstate NY. A majority used to be rural.

Heck my street wasn't paved for years. It was crusher run packed down.

Now it's paved. I got cable TV. Street lights. Of course more farm land sold and turned into houses.

There was a parcel of property that I wanted down my street that had some acreage for cheap. However the town didn't want me to turn it back into farm land. You know, demo the house that was on it.

I wanted to plant corn or let a farmer rent it for haying or something that will feed beef or feed humans.

To guard their food supplies, countries are turning to trade protectionism — one major factor that sharply worsened the 2007-2008 crisis. Since the Russian invasion, Indonesia has set new limits on palm oil exports to control prices. Hungary banned all grain exports last week; Serbia on Wednesday said it would ban exports of wheat, corn, flour and cooking oil. On Thursday, Egypt — a country 80 percent reliant on Russian and Ukrainian wheat — imposed controls on grain exports as the price of subsidized bread has already started to creep up.

Grains are global commodities, and the price for flour, bread and other foods is set to hike across the globe, including in the United States. But the countries most impacted are likely to be those most heavily dependent on Ukrainian and Russian wheat — including Egypt, Turkey, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Eritrea, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Lebanon and Somalia.

In response to the Ukraine crisis, Syria said it would ration wheat, sugar and cooking oil. In Lebanon, a fragile government left with one month’s wheat supply, is diverting milled flour to bread makers while it scrambles to strike new import deals from other countries including India.

It's already starting to happen. A good friend of mine works for a small gas station/deli (right outside Hyde Park) and had a young fellow, 13 years old try to steal a bottle of ketchup, a bag of flour, and toothpaste. After being confronted and being told he can get locked up in juvi, the kid fessed up. The owner felt bad and let the kid off after the kid started crying saying his mommy needed it for cooking and to brush their teeth.

He said it would've been different if it was beer, candy or other nonsense that usually gets ripped off by juvis. But ketchup, flour and toothpaste?? Seriously this is only the start.
