Got a couple of my babies back

Now that these two are back in the state after making them “safer”. It’s time to get them out to the range so i can see how badly the SAFE act F’ed them up. The para is set up for stripper clips and the other one uses a new device which locks the mag in place until you completely separate the upper from the lower. Next up is making a spur grip for the FAL to make one featureless, but that’s for another weekend out of state at my buds house.

Disclaimer - I don’t give a rats ass what your legal opinion is on these as none of us know until some poor bastard gets raked over the coals. I’m posting these if anyone else may have a FAL out of state as some potential options, but YMMV.

The bottom was my bitch gun that I built with the features I wanted for hog hunting when i use to live in a free state. The wood furniture was made by a company many years ago here in the states. It helped get the US parts count needed for the gun. Back in the day, Ive built dozens of FALs and helped others build a ton as well. I got into it back when you could have built them yourself for under $400.

On that one its a 16.5” barrel, wide paddle foot bolt release, folding charging handle so it didn’t dig into the back when slung and it use to have the L1A1 mag release for quicker mag changes. Was great for hunting in the brush being a carbine. Majority of the parts are metric, Imbel in origin. But then again, what was i thinking since nobody uses a black rifle for hunting.

I cordially invite you to PA for some range time with my Ace. Thing shoots almost as soft as a 5.56 gun. Reasonably accurate too, more so than the average battle rifle.............. Battle carbine?

The range I go to is just north of Altoona PA
Nice thing about the place is there isn't much in the way of restrictions, unlike the inane fudd rules in place at the public ranges.

Given the extremely short service life of the M14 I don't think it mattered at all. Nor do I think the FAL is all that much better than the M14.

Would've, could've, should've. We still would have ended up at the 5.56x45. I'm basing this of Ian of Forgotten Weapons' assertion that the .280 Brtitish was closer in power and recoil force to it's full power forebears than not. If anything by holding onto the FAL for as long as they did the European powers and their colonial offspring put themselves at a tactical disadvantage by forestalling the adoption of 5.56 rifles and carbines and their attendant increase of volume of fire.
The FAL was a fine rifle but not without its faults, chief among them it length and bulk.
The tilting bolt also has a number of downsides as well. Notice how every subsequent combat rifle/carbine has incorporated an rotating bolt of some kind.
