Got a good dressing down yesterday

Weather a rule or not all firearms should be cased and uncased on the firing line with muzzles pointing down range! You open the case and the muzzle is not pointing down range close it an turn it around. This should be done at a public range or in your backyard! Just my 2 cents!!

Um...if I draw my CCW weapon, is it pointed downrange and cased?

When I screw a different choke on my trap gun, is it pointed downrange and cased?

When I have a misfire and bring it back to clear it, pointed up, is it pointed downrange and cased?

I have a misfire with my reloads in my 308, it's stuck in the chamber, and is pointed at the ceiling. Is it pointed downrange and cased?

I have to say, respectfully, I disagree.

In fact, I remove 12Ga chokes by sticking my finger in the muzzle, applying tension, and turning the shotgun to loosen it.

Those are all things that you are doing after you have safely uncased a firearm and then hopeful doing them in a safe manner, without sweeping anyone! The OP was done shooting and should have brought the case to the line not the firearm to the case behind the line! And I know you knew what I meant!

If I have my weapon uncased at a range, there are many reasons for it. None included harming people.

Drop the "And I know you knew what I ment" nonsense, because with this stupidity, you certainly didn't.

My typical day at a range:

Arrive.

Get my guns out. (OMFG, crazy right?)

Decide what skills I want to practice.

Shoot a course based on those skills.

Leave.

One time I even...*gasp* drew my gun from a holster and shot.

So do I know what you mean? No! I don't live in fudd land.

I have shot at, worked at ,Worked as an RO at many ranges , there are a few very simple rules that keep us all safe. If you break one of the rules,well maybe no ones going to get hurt,but break 2 or 3 of the rules at the same time and we could all be in danger. From a distance we don't know if your breaking one rule or 10 rules at once and thats why if you break any rule no matter how small you think it is you got some ones attention. And I can tell you from personal experience, no matter how nice you ask some one to follow a rule. What they hear is rude and condecending. Its very difficult to tell some one who already thinks they are a gun and safety expert that they are acting in a dangerous manor. Also while speaking loud enough for a person wearing a set of 33 db ears 50 feet away from you even though they might have a set of electronic muff on, it probably does sound like screaming but its not screaming out of anger,its just communicating loud enough to be clearly heard. And yes there are the folks who then tell you why its ok for what they just did, We talk about the snow flakes being sensitive, try telling some one who been shooting for the last 30 years why they need to case a fire arm in a port .then you see what sensitivity is really about . Have fun and be safe

Darth how was my original post in this thread about the OP's thread out of line? And what is wrong with bringing a case to the line even if shooting on private land by yourself?

The rules might seem lame but there are just trying to keep some asshole from shooting you by "accident".

Being lame, and having good intentions are not mutually exclusive.

I'm not familiar with this range, and that rule might make good sense there, but to assume it makes good sense just because the people who instituted it had a good motive is not sound reasoning.

After all, many supporters (not authors though I am sure) of the SAFE act have a good motive for example, and we all know how unsound the reasoning for most of it is.

For people who don't know this range, there's barely room for a case in the shooting cubby. It's not practical to have a rifle case on the firing line in there. People usually case and uncase on the table a few feet behind the firing line. You just try to put your case directly behind you, but there's not a lot of room.

I just say that because I've been to ranges where the RO saw a problem (targets on the upright posts. Simple mistake.) and I swear I thought I was going to see a gunfight. No "please remove." He starts with "who the FUCK put the fucking targets on the goddamn uprights! TAKE THEM DOWN NOW!"

The guy said "if there is a problem, I can address it, but don't you dare disrespect me in such a manner."

And it went downhill. I actually got behind cover.

Yikes. That's what happens when two overinflated egos collide. I'll take it within reason. I've checked my ego years ago when I truly started to appreciate what the martial arts was teaching me. Sure it was a bit embarrassing with everyone around, but not worth getting into a pissing match over it.

Eh. If you have land you can do whatever you want. You can run out your back door duel wielding rifles and jump off your shooting table to do a 360 no scope. It's the public at large that you have to be careful around.

Not to mention, it's nearly impossible to rest your rifle on the bench without it balancing precariously and definitely not facing down range. So much so, that it's nearly pointing at the person in the lane next to you. Next time I'll just put the gun on the ground underneath the bench then go grab the case. Lesson learned.
