Got a rifle from a family member - can anyone tell me the name of the forend?

Hey all,

Recently got a NY-compliant rifle from an immediate family member - they're now out of the country for a few weeks without an easy way to contact them. Unfortunately before they left I didn't get part details. Even if I could, I'm not sure they would know the answer. I'm trying to figure out exactly what kind of forend is installed currently. I thought it was a free-float Hogue initially but I'm not completely sure.

Any ideas/confirmations? I'm asking because I'm not a huge fan of the aesthetics but it does provide nice heat-shielding - I would prefer a rifle length tube though or at least a mid-size one. Was considering UTG models or longer hogue ones but I'm really not sure yet.

Any tips on free-floats?

Kinda looks like Hogue to me though there are a lot of cheap-o free float tubes out there.

If you go UTG make sure it is the "Pro" stuff (actually made in US). I have a Superslim on my AR9. Well priced and installed easy and is tough as rocks.

ETA: how does the new gen Thordsen handle? I have a spare older one but thinking about ordering the newer for an upcoming build.

I spent about 200 rounds today using it - felt pretty great to me. Felt very natural and well-fitting. But to be fair, I don't have a lot of experiencing utilizing other grips or stocks. Only real issue is safety 'reachability'. I can go from safe to fire without moving grip but to return it to safe requires me to use my offhand or release the grip. Might install an ambidextrous safety to get around that.

Just bought a Seekins Precision ambi-safety. Should be able to get that on before shooting next weekend.

Well I'll say this... With all the shitty NY-compliant stocks out there, this makes me want to vomit the least.

Come to think of it, is the only thing separating this between normal thumbhole stocks, the "rifle grip" angle of this thing?

Essentially, yes. This is not a 'stock' since it never touches the buffer tube (so no thumbhole) and the 'hunting rifle' style of grip is allowed where-as the 'pistol' grip isn't.

Agreed, That might be a stock that I can actually live with.
It might be time for a new build.

I'm looking into replacing this handgrip with another one. Any suggestions? So far I'm leaning towards the AT-3 SPEAR M-LOK Free Float or the FM-9 M-LOK Free Float - just worried about heat resistance I guess. Any other ideas?

I like the hand grip honestly. Very different and cool looking. I’d get something welded on the front and you have a really nice looking complaint riffle.

I agree. Might be time for a .300 blackout for me??

The current handguard? I have no idea which is why I made this thread. I think it is a cheap knockoff Hogue look-alike.

It does look kinda like a Houge but it doesn't seem to have the over molding, though knurled versions were also offered so......... I dunno.

As for a replacement how much money do you want to spend? I really like my Centurion Arms CMR.

No, sorry I meant the ones you mentioned about replacing it with. Been a while since I bought a handguard (though I should soon as I have about 3/4 of a rifle in my workshop).
