My brother had a p365, XD, Kahr, and a sheild.
He seems to most often carry the shield. I've seen them under $300 new recently.

So I keep going back to the M&P family of pistols. I think I have ruled out the full size M&P, but am trying to decide between the M&P compact (allows use of full size double stack mags and has a capacity of 10) the M&P shield (thinner than the compact model due to being single stack and only holds 78 but can do a floor plate mag extension to increase to 10) and the M&P Shield EZ due to being hammer fired (only holds 8, no option currently for bigger capacity mags)
my intent with this is to have a gun I can do plinking with and carry it as well. Not looking to get into upgrading parts such as trigger, mainly just keep it stock other than night sights, so upgrading internals is not a factor.
Thoughts?

For carry it is hard to beat the M&P Shield. Very concealable, very reliable. This is my summer carry. No light attached. However like most sub-compacts, the size makes it... not fun at the range. I have done a pistol class with it, and while it performed well I did have issues with it pinching me on mag reloads if I didn't pay attention. (and to be honest, in any sort of situation, adrenaline will be flowing and you won't remember to move your pinky) With mag extensions you can get to get 10 rounds (and I think someone released a 12-round kit - at that point carry a bigger gun?).
M&P 2.0 Compact has probably become my favorite gun - fits my hand well, the grip is very gritty, but just shy of too much. As I said before I have a fullsize (4.25" barrel) also, but that's because they hadn't come out with the Compact at the time. Then when I bought the 4" barrel Compact they released the 3.6" barrel version... (I swear they do this to me on purpose) The compact can use the mags of the fullsize with a mag "collar" that prevents over-insertion. (don't you hate when that happens) Being stuck with 10 rounds in FUNY, not sure I'd recommend the fullsize for anything unless you're going 5" barrel and looking at competition. This is my winter carry, as I have to wear an additional layer to conceal it well enough for my liking. I have a TLR7 mounted on this. When I go to the range for practice and plinking, I of course bring both but the Compact gets more use as it is very nice to shoot. Someone left a steel dueling tree at my club last year and I had a bunch of fun with that.
Both come stock with metal sights which are certainly usable - again I'd highly recommend the AmeriGlo I-Dot sights, but it's personal preference. No matter which way you go, get the 2.0 model. The triggers will be much improved over the 1.0 models, the grip is better (no need for aftermarket talon grips etc) and it has other small improvements (metal reinforcement in the frame for the Compact/Fullsize).
I think the lowest price I've seen online for a 2.0 Shield is $300 which is absolutely insane. Compact runs a little more, think I've seen them for around $70. Another issue to consider - you might have a hard time finding the Compact coming with factory 10 rounds, as those mags were only released in the past year or so. My FFL pinned the mags for a small charge, but I couldn't buy more factory ones. I almost had the FFL order more and do the pinning again but to be honest, I don't want to depend on a modded magazine for reliability if I'm carrying..
If you go with the Shield, I would highly recommend NOT getting one with a safety; it is small and hard to disengage from what I've read online. For a new gun owner this can make them nervous, but if you practice good trigger discipline there's nothing to worry about. Obviously reholstering is probably the biggest concern - just clear any garments and holster slowly, looking if you have to.

Nothing wrong with da/sa, but some striker fired pistols have good triggers too. Personally I like HK, and have found the sk versions to be a good mix of size, shoot ability, and accuracy. If I could only have one it would be the vp9sk without question. Having said that, the Sig 365 is my usual carry. Mine the trigger has smoothed out to almost be to light for a carry piece imo.
As for a 22lr, keep an eye out for a used Ruger mark /Browning buckmark/or an SW Victory. Cheap, accurate, and a complete riot to shoot.

You can't go wrong with the S&W M&P's ( I have no experience with some of the other brands mentioned! ) If you do go with a M&P Shield , I have a gen 1 as carry gun JFYI the M&P 22 compact feels the same in your hand and work very well in the same holster. I mention this as I believe in trigger time. You can really work on your mechanics, breathing. trigger fallow through/re-set. target acquisition with a 22 for a whole lot less $$$$!!!
My Club just started shooting steel ( And became a USPSA affiliate Club) we were shooting steel since last I think it was Nov. every Sunday morning til this crap shut us down. Being new to me I was shooting either my Browning Buckmark ( my bullseye pistol ) or my full-size M&P 22 and I was having just as much fun as other's shooting their 9mm 40 S&W or 45 acp's for a lot less $$$!! Just my ping was not as loud!!
This is the same with rifle's as well!!

I have a few revolvers and rarely shoot them. Honestly I'm considering selling at least one of them to fund another semi-auto. I mean I have a 1911 in 10mm, what do I need a .357 magnum for?

Well I just “pulled the trigger” so to speak and ordered my first two pistols!
I decided to go with an M&P 2.0 compact with light package. I really wanted the Shield EZ model due to it being hammer fired, but because the compact uses double stack mags I get the full 10 rounds (woohoo thanks NY) Versus 8, plus it can use the double stack mags of the full size if freedom ever returns to NY
I also decide to try out an entry level 1911 and went with the Taurus PT1911 as most reviews seem to indicate it’s decently reliable

Next rounds of purchase will be some sort of revolver and a 1911-22 model to have a 22 pistol. The smith and Wesson 686 model really caught my eye

Look at the Browning medallion series 1911-22. Very reliable and solidly built. Some are polymer some are alloy. Get the alloy version.

Well they ship with 15 round mags but they will be swapped out for 10 rounders.

Nice choice on the M&P, although not sure on that Crimson Trace light. Might be hard to find holsters for. I love my Streamlight TLR7, though likely would prefer the 7A for a different "paddles". But if you got a good price for it you could always get a Streamlight or Surefire ($$$) at a later time.
I have no experience with Taurus guns, so can't comment. I've not heard many positive things but for a range gun it'll prolly go bang.. most of the time.
They make a MA-compliant model with 10-round mags - do they still mandate an obscene trigger in MA?
Yes, I was likely one of the first in NYS to own a 2.0 Compact (or so I like to believe) because they didn't have 10 round magazines for almost a FULL YEAR after releasing it - and I hassled them.. uhhh.. a few times... before they finally came out.

Well according to the guy at the firing pin I talked to they would swap out the dangerous 15 round mags for 10 round mags. So I don’t have to spend extra

So how does that process work right now?
Buy gun online, mail in a pistol addition form to Erie county, wait for Erie county to add it to your license, then go pickup from firing pin?
When or how do you do the background check?
Call the firing let them know you ordered something, when it comes in you go to the shop, they will come out with a tablet (I'm guessing it's a tablet) you do your 4473 on that they give you the receipt, once its added to your license you call let them know and go pick it up

I asked the firing pin that. What they told me was:
go to their website and order gun. When it arrives to store they contact me to set up appointment. Go to store at said appointment time and do background check. Pass background check and they give me purchase coupon. I go back home with purchase coupon and then mail that with my approval letter and check for $3(or5 I can’t remember) to Erie county permit office. Wait for plastic permit card to come the mail. Once I have plastic permit card with pistols on it, drive back and pick up my pistols.

Right now nowhere because every range in Erie county is closed. In the summers I will go to Alabama swamps up near gasport ny. The rest of the year I either go to wolcott guns in depew or I make the drive to the firing pin in Bergen. I also attend the guns and grub yearly event up in gasport ny. That’s about it. I don’t know anybody with property I can shoot on and most of the clubs around here don’t want new members or are filled with fudds that hate black rifles and firing more than one shot a minute. Someday I hope to buy property I can shoot on.
