For once I agree with him. In the job I have now there is no such thing as sick time, paid holidays or personal days. You get 5 vacation days a year after 1 year, and then it goes up to 10 vacation days a year after 5 years of employment. The time also does not roll over but it does renew every year on your hire date. Ive had to force myself to go in and work when I’ve had the flu before just I would still have time off available to be able to visit my brother in Indiana or to be able to go away for a weekend with my girlfriend.

I never had sick time until I started working for the state. I worked for 20 years no sick time.
Same gig as yours 5 personal days and after a year I think it was 2 weeks vacation when I started. I made it work without issues but then again I rarely ever get sick. As in I went like a 4-5 year stretch without being sick. I used to get more vacation time after so many years. I was up to 20 days vacation and 5-6 personal days before I left. Not sure if yours increases like that or not.

Now is a great time to look for another job if you’re willing too. There is a worker shortage. Maybe you can get some paid time off.

Also I do agree people should get a descent amount of paid time off I just don’t think the government should force it because what will happen is it will get abused by all these people at low level jobs and the cost of everything will rise as it did with the minimum wage increase. These increases are out pacing most people’s raises.

People already abuse the NYS paid family medical leave act. I know someone who does it. It’s my useless sister. She takes off 3 months a year to take her kids to the doctors. One diagnosis is made up. She works four ten hour days and makes all doctors appointments on days she works just so she can take them off.

Benefits are offered by companies to attract good people for hire, and keep unions out. The Government has no right to mandate this crap.

Worked my career 40+ years and never had, sick leave, vacation, etc., why do people think they are owed anything more than what THEY agreed to!?

How much of your salary would you want to trade for a few sick days ?

It's all part of the compensation package. You don't get something for nothing.

I would gladly trade some of it. They used to offer paid holidays and 3 unpaid personal days a year. They did away with that 2 years ago. We are not even allowed unpaid time off.
Why not require a doctors note to be able to get paid sick time? Two months ago when I damaged my Achilles heel and could barely walk I still had to work. The car business in general is headed in a bad direction.

A lot of people where I work abuse it too. Companies can't do anything about it because the state doesn't require proof for why you took time off. I work with a guy that used it all last summer to play softball. Every time he had a game on a work day he'd call in PFMLA. He got paid to miss work and play softball. It's going to be worse this year because people get more money and more time off for free. On top of that the guys on his crew have to pick up the extra work if nobody comes in to cover his shift AND the company has to pay overtime to fill the spot. We don't currently have sick days so it's going to get worse if this goes through

If you trade enough I'm sure they would be happy with that deal.

If they're not, find someone who will be.

At the end of the day, there is only one reason to work where you do, and that's because you think it's the best deal you can get.

My wife gets 6 paid sick days and 9 paid personal day per years. She has around 150 personal days saved up.

You should get sick time and personal days , Paid or not is on the company , But if your sick or your kid is sick It shouldn't be the end of the world for your business, I don't get sick very often , Once every few years , But when I get sick. Its nasty , sometimes for weeks . Sometimes you need a few days off . I don't begrudge the government taking care of its employees .

Yes I’ve heard the car sales is going to drop like a rock. People are defaulting on their loans and rolling over previous loans on cars and inflating their payments. I heard the new car sales will be in the toilet in the coming year or two.

This I agree with. An employer should have to give you time off whether paid or unpaid. If unpaid, that’s fine. It’s the employer’s choice. Anything else is just plain exploitation. I also understand that you don’t have to take the job. There has to be a balance somewhere though. Because if there isn’t, then you have China. A country where every employer exploits their workers and there is nowhere else to go to take another job.

Like it or not, this country is the way it is because of unions.

Your beliefs in theory are correct. Capitalism and all that Jazz. But the reality is that pure capitalism without some socialism doesn’t work and pure socialism without some capitalism doesn’t work.

That job that you have now with the Cadillac Benefits and good pay is a result of both socialism and capitalism. Because if socialist and union pushes didn’t happen, there would be no benefits. We would all be working 7 days straight with no time off. Why would another company or entity even offer benefits if their competitor doesn’t? And when a new startup decides to not offer any, the old company that does could take their benefits away with no repercussions. And where would that leave you? You can’t shop around for another job because that one will follow suit to save money.

Unions are what prevent that. Because without them, the employee has to work to survive and can’t just walk out by himself.

The only thing that doesn't support your hypothesis is the evidence. Non union jobs today tend to pay more.

I've heard the "with no unions, we'd have bad working conditions" myth many times. Not only is that not true, as you can voluntarily leave any job that doesn't suit you at any time, and when enough workers do that, a company can't survive, but even if it were true, you are entitled to exactly nothing you do not agree to when you accept the job.

Here is a question for you: By law, the minimum a job can pay you is the minimum wage. Why do some workers not get paid the minimum wage?

I'm sort of in this camp as well. I don't blame capitalism for wanting to constantly increase profit margins and be profit centric. That's the fuel that propels the engine.

It's up to "the people" sit really set the guidelines around how much freedom that process has to develop naturally. Medicine is a perfectly example of where we, as a society, have to set some limits around what a "health care" provider really is, what duties it must fulfill, etc. You set the parameters, like the rules of a race or a baseball game, and then you let it unfold organically without specifying every single individual action or strategy. (We're just starting to hit some of these growing pains when it comes to social media, and how we want to classify such companies.)

I do not find a company in the wrong for looking out for their shareholders. A good company puts their bottom lines first, that's just good business.
