GP100 or 9mm/.40 carbine build?

The title says it all. Looking for opinions. I would like a 357/38 revolver and I also would like to build an ar platform pistol carbine in either 9mm or .40. I currently have a Glock 23 and would like a carbine to go with. I also would very much like a GP100, however I am on a limited budget so I can only finance one at this time. What do you all think? I know it's all subjective, but I'd like to hear some other perspectives.

You can stretch your funds if you buy used revolvers. I have seen quite a few used 357 revolvers in the case at the LGS.

I can only speak to S&W, Dan Wesson and the Ruger Vaquero 357s. All are fairly close to the same quality.

For the AR you would be better off staying with the 9mm on a budget.

I don't reload at this point. I like the .40 and I also have a conversion barrel to 9mm for my glock, so I could make the 9mm carbine work.

I like me a S&W 686 and the Ruger Vaquero is also on my list. Used is definitely an option, but I haven't seen that many used at my LGS unfortunately. I don't really have questions so much as I'm looking for opinions on what one would go with over the other. The revolver would at this point be more of a range toy/home defense (maybe) but more so an itch I need to scratch. The carbine, would serve as a companion to my Glock and would be a good SHTF tool, it would also be a toy, but the whole compliance BS makes me feel like I'd be better off saving the carbine build until I'm in greener pastures...Bottom line I'm just indecisive.

If a .40 is what you have and carry, I would go with the .40.

Same magazines, same ammo, ect.

My 9mm is 38 special and 357 mag (S&W 642, and S&W 66). My 66 is by far the favorite shooter. I reload all calibers. so it's nice and easy to collect revolver brass. 40 S&W can be had for under $15 a box if you look hard enough. If you can handle a Glock 23, you can handle full power 357s out of a GP100.

I tend toward handguns, but if I had a Ruger PC40 or a Marlin Camp 40 in front of me for a good price I would take it.

The GP (Great Pistol) 100 is a great gun, carried one on and off while on the job. Real work horse, handles what ever you feed it, easy to take down and clean.

I had a similar choice to make and chose a 9mm carbine. The 9mm carbine is alot of fun to shoot.

I believe you made a typo Camp carbines were offered in 9 and 45.

Not being a Glock guy I didn't realize the glock you owned was a 40 so it would make more sense to build your AR in 40 if you are on a budget.

Not being a Glock guy I didn't realize the glock you owned was a 40 so it would make more sense to build your AR in 40 if you are on a budget.

only problem is building a 40cal Ar is expensive. QC10 is about the only game in town. you will have just shy of $900 in lower/barrel/bolt. you can build an entire 9mm AR for about that money.....

If I go the carbine route it will be in 9mm for the reasons you've stated plus parts for the .40 seem hard to come by. I already have the 9mm conversion barrel for my Glock 23. If I do go this route I'll be contacting you @Bullet Guy and even if I decide against it for now, it will happen in the near future. You have barrels for these also yes? To me that seems the most annoying part. The only barrels I've seen are threaded.

You are gonna have to get a threaded barrel and put a cap on it. No other choices right now.

Either cap it, or contact ar15barrels.com they will make you a non threaded barrel. I've had it done twice

So it looks like I am getting the GP100. Found a used six inch stainless in good condition. Handled it today everything looked to be solid. The guy wants $450.

I am a bit partial to wheel guns but I say go with a GP-100, its a superbly well built gun. .357 are easy to shoot out of it, .38's for fun. I have the 4 inch version and love this gun.

Well, I closed the deal on the GP100. This one is 1993 vintage. Has the older roll marks. I'm pretty sure it has has some trigger work. Older night sites too. $450 plus $10 transfer fee care of FUAC. dropping the amendment off next week. Excited to take this baby to the range!!

I know about Citadel 9mm M1 carbine knockoff that can be converted to SAFE act compliance but no one I know sells it around here and I am concerned about quality control

9mm AR with a Thordsen Stock is compliant.

I did commit to buying the revolver. Paid for it and did transfer today right after work. Such a beautiful piece of iron. I never thought it would happen to me, but I've been way more into handguns than rifles since getting my permit. The compliance issues are something I am getting so very tired of and they make owning and building an AR platform rifle more expensive and an ass pain than it needs to be. That said, I will be building an AR platform 9mm carbine, but I am going to do so piece meal.

Yeah, I'm super pumped! I originally was looking at the 686 for a double action revolver, but the more I looked into the ruger, the more I liked it. Actually got my permit amended today, so I'm going to go bring her home tomorrow afternoon! Maybe I'll get to the range this weekend.
