GPS down?

Interesting.... Just a data point im at a family gathering out of town and multiple people have had gps go down this afternoon.

Be alert. Could be the start of something, could be nothing.

My wife and daughter "dad I'm glad you had paper maps".

If ww3 really starts gps is done. So it's concerning. Keep and eye out and post any updates or share any info here.

If I need to leave and go home I will.

GPS is easier to block than a 7pm robocaller. Don’t sweat it. It’s very low wattage, and easily interrupted. Besides, until TikTokBook goes dark the rest of the world won’t even notice.

You can download sections of Google maps directly to your phone, and they are then available offline.

Not quite as SHTF proof as paper, but a hell of a lot more convenient.

And I think the cellular networks are more vulnerable than GPS.

GPS uses a very weak signal. It's not unheard of to loose the GPS due to interference from something else.

I used to boat on Skaneateles Lake when Clinton was in office. Every time he was in town, we could only get signal from one satellite, which couldn't give you position.

Funny, I was thinking that the other day: Topo Map and a Grid Square Ruler; I'm good to go...still haven't learned Latitude & Longitude but recognize it when I see it.

This is true, but you still need GPS sat signals even with offline maps.

I still have a paper map of NY. I always use GPS because it's faster and better, but it's valuable to have a fallback.

You can still use the offline map as a map, even without GPS enabled.

OfC, there's a lot more skill involved in reading a map when it doesn't have a perpetual "you are here" mark from GPS, but they are still very valuable.

Just the offline map and a compass app is enough to navigate effectively if you have the skill.

You can also keep the satellite maps cached offline, a luxury that wasn't available even in paper maps until very recently.

I wouldn't worry about GPS taking a hit. When the internet and cell service go belly up lock your doors...

I do this regularly in rural areas and it works great but if you have no signal at all sometimes it doesn’t work. I’m not sure why but there has been a few cases where the screen and map hasn’t shown up without service.

There are some exclusively offline mapping apps you can download as well, that use public domain data that aren't bad either.
