So how likely is a radiation release from a nuke plant with one of these events? I've kinda assumed that if a grid down event is severe enough to prep for, I'm probably gonna get irradiated anyway.

I think it is likely if the grid goes down. Given the situation, the outcome will depend on what actions are taken of course, but when they run out of reserve power, the coolers will boilover and radiation will certainly leak. I think almost everyone is vulnerable to radiation in all of america regardless where they live. The wind alone takes leaked radiation from one plant across the nation far enough to cover plenty of states. If you conservatively only multiply that amount, I think everybody is at serious risk of being exposed to "unhealthy" amounts of deadly radiation levels. The precautionary measures are only temporary.

That is a fantastic question that I cannot find a reliable answer to. Some think there will be enough time and resources to scram the reactors in a controlled shutdown. Others think there's no chance.

I started reading the different types of coolant systems. As best as I can tell the passive cooling water should be ok, the rest, who knows. You also have to hope their containtment structures would work. It shouldn't be like fukushima where there was catastrophic failure everyehere

I am so very up to date on what is going on in regards to our grid. I belong to a few groups that their sole purpose is to bring the issues to the public and to Washington.

The only one I'm terribly concerned about is the one that's less than 5 miles upwind of my home.
