I'm more of a lone wolf personality, but know that groups are better. Now how does one know who to bring into a group or not?

I will not bring in people I know that dont take it seriously now. By that I mean people who say it will never happen (shtf of sorts).

Prepardness groups
A previous post on this topic for reference. As I said in that post, for me it is hard to allow people close when if you need your life to depend on them, they have to be decent people. There are a lot of not so savory characters out there, and some you only find out about after knowing them a while. As far as people who don't take it seriously, if you can get them to see it as a practical idea and not some kook thing, work on them. If they write it all off as stupid and foolish, your time is better spent in another direction.

Agreed. Start with family and work out from there. But as you mentioned in your original post be 100% sure of the people you allow into your circle.

I would say it is definitely advisable to start small with just a few trusted people. Preferably people that are your close friends or family. From there you can bring in neighbors or people that live in the same general area as you.

To put a group together you have to have a goal in mind. And there has to be a basic level of commitment. Starting a group does not need to be something overly regimented. It can start off as casual friends getting together for a cup of coffee or a bite to eat discussing ideas.

From there you can take it to any level you want. But you gotta get started somewhere.

Does anyone have advice for finding others that are into prepping already?

Its tought because I'm trying to meet others but do not want to be seen as the neighborhood kook it anything.


I recently got my parents to buy their first ever gun and they have a decent pantry stockpile in their basement. So at least they are better off now than they were in the past.

Its tough to get people into it who aren't alert to whats going on in the world already.

Typically it seems the conversation goes on explaining various scenarios or events to be worried about and the other person doesn't think it's realistic, they don't want to think of it or they start making it about politics etc...

I talk to people at work, and usually an interest in guns leads to a knowledge of anti-gun goings on, and then just conversation from there. I do know like minded individuals, but am not a part of any group. The like minded people live too far away to be an effective group, and local folks are not trustworthy enough to allow into my inner circle.

Raising of livestock, farming
Mobile logistics
Off-grid power means
Familiarity with local edible plants
Where to locate necessities
ETC., ETC., ETC.

I have a pretty good group of friends. There are 8 of us including my girlfriend. We have all been close friends for 20-30 years and hang out weekly, if not daily.
We all take it seriously and have all worked hard to get what we need.
We have an er doctor, an RN, a mechanical engineer, a mechanic/welder/ jack of all trades and a farmer with agricultural and livestock experience as well as survival experience. Five of us spent time in the military, 4 of us in combat.

However it is very difficult to agree on anything. We hope if SHTF we will start to agree a bit more.

When we get together every week, its in the kitchen or around the BBQ. I went to culinary school and own a food business now.

i'm 50'ish now .. back when we had the big ice storm , i got to NAPA ( fireman with blue light ) they were open .. grabbed some 12V drop lamps .. got back to mom's , tossed the extension cord in the window .. changed out some lamps . fired up the 1971 duster .. mopar generator .. we had lights .. .. cooked on the wood stove .. to me and my brother it was just like camping but in the house ..

now . from what i see i know a few cousins won't be invited .. Hillery lovers . GRRRR i give up ,.. hard choice but has to be made ..

just a few close friends now and mom( but she can handle it on her own if needed ..)

but still have the eyes and mind open for others ..

I don't know how the boy scouts are now .. been lots of yrs .. but if they are or could be the same as when i was in it should be a law .. every kid has to join .. summer camps .. learning how to cook on open fire .. in fire pits ( dutch oven peach cobbler king here ) .. winter camps ... pouring flood rains ..

+1 on the scouts. I remember at a young age wanting to be a scout because I was always interested in the outdoors. We used to have a decent range at summer camp to shoot 22's. Anyone remember Camp Siwanoy?

Know who else is a scout ?? Most scouts I know are 40 year old virgins with no life skills. Probably not a good idea.

In a former life i used to travel all over this country and in the midwest, West Virginia, and a few other places there were these towns that were nearly empty. I would drive down Main street and all the stores would be boarded up and most houses were empty and there was often a empty factory near by. It occurred to me that a group of like minded people could move into one of these towns and fix it up for a relatively small investment. The benefits seem to be well worth the cost. For people with the "prepper" mindset it seems to be win-win. The city council, school board and other offices would be filled with like minded people, not your typical left wing sheeple. The only thing i see as a possible problem is jobs. So, what do you think?

If enough people could financially swing it and earn a living doing it I imagine it would be a Great idea.

This is actually happening on a small level in several areas. During our research into what would be needed to have a small community that was completely self reliant we found three such areas. We visited one in WV a few years ago. They had purchased an abandoned housing development which had been left when the builder went bankrupt.
They had been operating for 6 years and were set pretty good. They had their own water, electric(solar, wind and diesel genorators), they have their own water from gravity fed springs. They grow and raise food, and have security, which we dodnt see much of but they assured us it was there.
Their kids still use public schools and they shop in town so they arent a cult or anything. They gave us alot of ideas which we have implemented.
They were the ones to tell us to never share plans or pictures online and to never talk about anything outside of the group. Im not real good about that.

As far as I know, they live on money from retirement, military pention, hunting and raft guiding and selling livestock.
