gun choices

The impending storm that I prepare for is the one that happens every couple of years here in Western New York. It's the freak winter storm that dumps six feet of snow across two days. It's the ice storm that destroys the electrical infrastructure and knocks out power for two weeks. Or at least that's what I tell people.

The Storm, includes everything that is not within the normal scope of life, to include these horrible storms that we are forced to endure.

Everything I buy/own is dual purpose. I am not worried about common caliber/cartridges nor do I limit my choices in tools by them.

The everthing I own is capable of being used in a support roll of one flavor or another, (perimeter defense, area denial, personal defense) and for pleasure.

Have you guys bought "specific" guns, like a G19, AR15, SKS etc.,. Specifically with the thought of I need this exact gun as a part of my plan.

Have you bought duplicates of the same type of gun in the interest of commonality to share with a family member or spare parts?

I definitely think like that personally, have incorporated that kind of thinking into future purchases and training regimens.

I personally haven't incorporated duplicates though into what I have, as budget is a limitation. For me personally diversity is a stronger thing to aim for, for the time being, as different firearms have very different scenarios in which they are useful. For instance for rifles I only have an AR and and SKS. If SHTF I could probably arm my fiancee (who is a female and petite) with the AR and expect her to reasonably operate it. I couldn't expect to toss her my yugo SKS and expect the same, given the weight of the firearm. Furthermore I don't think she could handle the (slightly greater) recoil of the 7.62x39. But on the flipside in the AR I have a high performance, highly accurate and low recoiling rifle and in the SKS I have a trench gun you can put through absolute hell and back, and then run it over with a tank and it'll still function. In addition it makes sense for me personally to have an AR and a SKS (over let's say 2 ARs) as the SKS is an incredibly simple system that is reliable, low amount of moving parts, ect. Also diversity of calibers is a plus.

But in regards to future purchases, I'd prefer to buy something like a hunting caliber rifle (for instance .308) than buy another AR for myself. Just creates a new scenario that I can now tackle more effectively (large game hunting) as opposed to increasing a role I already have largely covered. If money wasn't an issue I'd get both, but that's just how I see things. Plus put in the right hands the .308 could cover you in a SHTF scenario from a distance, so it has potential combat purpose as well.

Ill use 22LR, 12 gauge, 9mm and 308.
I have tons of ammo for each.
Ill also have my 10mm on my side always.

Most of.my purchases were based on this.
However..some were not. my 460 s&w money couldve been spent on something useful. But you never know when youll need to shoot a burglar through your neighbors fridge.

Every caliber has its use.

If I could buy enough ammo I would find a way to use my 338 Lapua in a survival situation also.
As of now I have about 200 rounds and plan on reloading 338 with scrap lead.
If SHTF I will use it for home defense as long as the ammo holds out.
You never know when youll need to take someone out at 3,000 yards.

So yes, I choose calibers with that in the back of my mind. I've almost bought some odd caliber stuff though, but I can't seem to bring myself to do it.

SHTF could be as simple as extreme limits on ammo purchases or banning semi auto firearms.
10 years ago I would not have believed a law would be passed to ban one of the most commonly owned platforms in the country, which is almost identical mechanically to a wood stock hunting rifle. But, we got the SafeAct.

i buy for reasons and for fun.
you gotta have a 22 rifle so you can shoot a lot and get good with a rifle.
you should have a 22 pistol so you can shoot a lot to get good with pistols. (and introduce others, including women and children into the shooting sports!)
a 12 gauge is must have food Defense and SO Many sports!

have At least one gun you can reload for and have the supplies. (lee Hand loading kits are great and portable)

its nice to have a Long range gun too!
(when you see Grace Jones and her mad max buddies surrounding your house, you should be able to reliably reach out and say hello!)

i built a 22 pistol to shoot pistol bullseye.
i am putting together a pistol for shooting steel challenge.
and i and working on a gun to shoot High Power Service rifle. (stupid Safeact BS!)

I see SHTF as something that could actually hurt you. Limits on ammo and firearms are indeed an infringement on your rights but not something that could hurt you in itself. Somewhere like south africa those things I'd consider SHTF but not here. At least not yet. Something like grid down for extended periods of time or food shortages I would consider SHTF. So now let's look at places in the world that actually have what I would consider SHTF. And there aren't many. Parts of africa are what first comes to mind where there is truly no means of getting food and water is one. No food and water means you die. Then there are the parts we already talked about like south africa where people are systematically being hunted and killed and the government does nothing to step in and help. And of course the warloards of africa. Next would be the middle east. That's kind of self explanatory. Then North Korea. Also self explanatory. Of course there are other places that have it in a bad way but not nearly as wide spread. America isn't even close. Probably dead last in fact.

Agree. Ammo infringements or shortages are inconveniences. Nothing more. You can always get some at another state, order another available caliber online, ect.

Besides, who here only has 1 box of ammo that when there is a shortage they are up shit's creek? It's real simple. Stock up so a shortage doesn't affect you and if one comes, cut down on leisure shooting.

Agreed.
But these are still reasons to buy gun related items.
As @GOPerfect mentions above, everyone should be well stocked far before any restrictions happen.
Im just saying that in our very prosperous, spoiled society, some may see buying 1 box of ammo every 90 days pretty disastrous.
I will not ever run out of 22LR or 12 gauge.......ever.
Ive been stocking them for 30+ years.

Becoming injured and losing your job at 54 years old could be pretty SHTF to some.
In any case, buy lotsa guns and stock ammo deep and wide. You never know.

I used to buy like that until 2008.. since then I have whittled it down to IN hunting calibers only.
I'm just not convinced that chaos will break out in my area.
And IMO if it does, we'll be leaving with what we can carry out of here (if we still have that option).
45ACP is the only non-hunting caliber we have now.
The last ammo scarcity left plenty of .243 and .270 on the shelves which was great.

.223 is only good for coyote around here.
7.62x39 .40SW and 10mm were just adopted as deer-legal so I might start looking into those.
