So on vacation I did some research on gun laws of the Dominican Republic. They have a treaty with the United Nations in which they disarmed their citizens and vowed not to manufacture firearms or ammunition. Now they can carry with a permit and a lot of hula hoop jumping. 65,000 legal permits and an estimated 865,000 unregistered weapons in rotation. The bribing of officials is allowed and in fact encouraged if you would like special toys. The full auto glock my cousin carries over there cost him about 60k in American dollars. That includes the bribe. The glock alone was 3k because of supply and demand.

Dude my cousin just came back from over there shot in the hip because he was held up by "police" trying to rob him coming from a club. Went to a doctor to stop the bleeding and patched him up. Got on a plane and came back the the good ol USA for the surgery to remove the bullet.

He's got a really cool souvenir at least. I don't stop for the police over there, not in a car much less on foot. I didn't have any issues and it has gotten a lot safer IMO. I was chased through a cemetery but that's unrelated. You should definitely visit.

Sounds like you're making a wise decision. Traveled in Kenya for 10 years with nothing but a panga (machete) and a tactical folder. I was very lucky in a few dicey situations. No guns allowed for civilians so, only thugs and police had guns, and they were intersecting sub-sets.

Take a knife and learn to deflect bullets with it like I did. Also take money in case you have to bribe.

Couldn't pay me enough to go there or Jamaica, as both places are shitholes.

I've been to many gun controlled countries never stop the crime and intimidation

In Brazil I've had a gun pointed and waved at me asking me if I spoke English I just shook my head no and kept going

In India I was Chase with a man with a knife luckily he was clearly on drugs couple of quick turns and small alleys and I got away

In Cambodia we had to drive through a bad area so we hired three teen militia with AK-47s not even sure if one of them could've possibly been working

In the Philippines I had two guys brandish and guns for no reason

Well a tall (very attractive, may I add) white guy in these places, loaded down with camera equipment can sometimes be a sore thumb!
Also working in journalism frequently takes you to places that aren't the beaten tourist paths
