This thread is to post a bit about guns. what they are, why they are the way they are and a bit of history if possible.

Why not start this with a Stoner classic the Stoner 63.

Even by today's standards this is an amazing design. Stoner was in deed a smart engineer.

I'm posting this simply because this the gun I wish I could have been issued as a vehicle born troop as opposed to the cumbersome (in vehicles) M16A2.

Interesting that he says mid video that he carried an AK. I wonder how common AK usage is / was to any degree in special forces, and what their reasons were for choosing it when it was used? I'd assume for barrier destruction and maybe less chance of being deflected in the jungle by branches and leaves during bullet flight, but who knows.

The M16 didn't work at first because they were not being properly maintained so many saw the AK as the alternative and special forces are known
to be proficient with enemy's weapons. Sometimes they use them and leave no signs of presecense that might help them infiltrate and attack again.
I don't really know but once the M16 issues were addressed with proper maintenance then it became an awesome jungle rifle specially due to the
capability for long patrols (up to 2 or 3 days) to carry huge amount of fire power otherwise prohibitive by the weight.
It was not unusual for patrols to carry up to 700 or 800 rounds or more each and these just regular infantry. Something not possible with other weapons systems including the ak.
I hope this makes sense.

Smith & Wesson Light Rifles In 1940, Britain’s request for a paramilitary 9mm semi-auto carbine resulted in the rapid creation of the Smith & Wesson Light Rifle design and 1,010 were sent overseas. But there was a problem – these guns were made to fire American 9mm ammunition and European 9mm loadings were too powerful. At the end of WWII, the British elected to destroy all but five of their Light Rifles.

The barrel liner as originally designed helped a lot, too!! Gummint screwed it up.

This is a war-trophy rifle once belonging to Chief Black Kettle that became part of Custer’s personal collection.

Chain Gun - 1845.

A chain gun uses a continuous chain that is driven around a couple of sprockets, to feed the firearm. The chain has chambers where cartridges may be loaded. Many designs using this concept were developed from around 1850-1880 or so. One of the early models was the Treeby Chain gun invented in 1854.
