They are not, they are meant to hold your brains to keep from shocking the rest of your unit.

IDK, I heard the Kevlar's weren't warmly received by soldiers at first.
Military helmets aren't there to stop bullets, though most modern ones will typically stop 9mm at a distance. What they are there for is to stop shrapnel and fragments from explosives.
Soliders in general dislike any of the gear they have to wear or carry in the same way a construction worker woukd dislike his helmet.
No. They actually offer less protection
The K Pot is lighter but bulkier than the steel versions.

Helmets first used in ww1 because of deaths caused from shrapnel and other objects. After they were issued head injuries skyrocketed because solders who got hit with shrapnel were hurt but stayed alive.helmet were never ment to stop bullets but at long ranges they still are better then nothing.

Of course there is a contemporary corrally to this; lots of troops have survived injuries over the past two decades that would have been fatal a generation (or less) ago due to improvements in technology, medicine, logistics, training, and know how.
Tragically enough these folks have often enough not received the care and support they need and deserve. Make no mistake- that is a bipartisan failure and disgrace. Just something I think about on holidays like this.
