The one good thing about my apartment is that it is surrounded on all sides by concrete. Definitely would keep a 5.56 inbounds.

Pretty sure, yeah. Maintenance had to reattach a shelve and they had a hell of a time drilling a new hole for it.

Ive thought a bit about this.
Our home is old, like 150 years old.
The walls are thick and strong.
Lath over 3/4 inch boards, plaster over that, then 150 years of paint.
Ive never seen walls built like this.
Lathand plaster yes, but the 3/4 inch boards are overkill.
I use #4 buckshot and a 10mm for home defense.
The GF will be mad, but some day im gonna try it.

I was looking for the original articles that Greg Ellifritz was rehashing, searching let's go on about penetration results were essentially all about hacking, searching penetration results were essentially various porn results with heavy G as in LGBT influence. Searching Over Penetration worked fine.

Most pros seem convinced that a single element of a Home Defense strategy can be not accurately judged in a vacuum, since there's a huge set of variables. Besides training, planning, mental conditioning, physical conditioning, tactics, cover, alarms, surveillance, communication, lighting, or shelter, our considerations of under- penetration vs over-penetration ...
Include multiple Home Defense weapon options & training for family members.
Include alternate ammunition options in spare magazines or guns.
We felt this was necessary in order to stop threats from various potential intruders (visually there's a chance our attempted home invasion entrants wore vests or at least had over dressed torsos for winter weather).
Rather than limiting ourselves to aiming at less protected body part targets to stop the threat from intruding assailants, we include an option to better ensure better penetration to stop the threat from a hardened or heavily dressed assailant.
It is also rare if our EDC spare mag ammo selection does not include an alternate ammunition choice that has been vetted for reliability in our EDCs.

I want a bullet that has the most penetration through interior walls and I have chosen a bullet that will do so.
If see this image below, I want my rounds to go right through the wall because the wall is what I'll be aiming at and the shooter will be doing this if he knows I'm armed.
Bullets are supposed to penetrate to kill but bullet manufacturers have duped the public into thinking that it's a bad idea so they can sell you the latest and greatest bullet that expands to .783 but can't penetrate for shit. All misses (which you will do under stress) are over-penetrators no matter what bullet you use.

Many folks here are not considering deflection. Unless you’re putting shots perpendicular to the object you’re trying to penetrate there will be some deflection.
Every material has a different deflection coefficient. So, now that shot into the corner of a wall at a 30 degree angle leads to a 7 degree deflection putting the round past the intended target and hopefully a good backstop.
Again, I’m not trying to argue angles but just to point out you need to know your backstop. Glass is notorious for this.

how i think .. some asshole breaks in and attacks you ,.,, you retaliate and shoot .. u miss and hit the wall and it goes threw it and hits the neighbors house or someone in it .. not my fault .. its the assholes that broke in and made me shoot .. or we can all just have bb guns

I'm not playing pool and betting angle of deflection because I'm trying to have my bullet penetrate a surface and "hopefully" strike the target... I'm going to aim at, what I'm aiming at, and hit it! Can't think any other way! You fight the way you train... No sense putting garbage in your head, or worry, or predisposing your thought process with doubt, which could lead to a hesitation, that'll cost you more than your willing to lose.
There's actually training methodology which dictates not even aiming... Like throwing a baseball, reactionary and instinctual muscle responses. Don't think too much... You don't even worry about your sights, just draw, focus on target, and shoot... Try it some time, is amazing what happens! Of course while training you are not subject to the body alarm reactions and fight/flight brain dump which "will" have an effect. But give it a go... Lol
Anyways, as for any potential discharge exiting my exterior walls...? Well, I'm not on Long Island, so when you generally consider the amount of energy lost penetrating the exterior of my home and the distance to the next, I'm not overly concerned. Again, my primary concern will "ONLY" be what's in front of me, and my aim being true, with the help and blessings from above, I'll be available to discuss it when authorities arrive, and I'll be the only one discussing it.
If you're worried about it all... Buy some 3/4" Kevlar wallboard and rehang over all your interior walls... Refinish and done! There... Now you can spray and pray indiscriminately inside and not worry about exterior penetration! Hahahaha
