Someone on another forum mentioned this to me and it looks really interesting. It's a weekend rifle marksmanship course with a bit of history thrown in.

From their website:

Project Appleseed™ isn’t a gun club or a militia, nor is it a historical society. Instead, we are a non-partisan group of men and women (known as the Revolutionary War Veterans Association) who are committed to upholding the values and principles of America’s founding fathers. We use rifle marksmanship instruction as a gateway to help bring our nation’s history to life and to show that many of the values that our forefathers relied on to win our independence are still very much in demand today.

Through clinics and events, we teach rifle marksmanship and early American heritage to introduce individuals of all skill levels to the knowledge that was so crucial to the success of our nation’s founders. Aside from the fun and camaraderie of these events, the designed takeaway is a renewed sense of civic responsibility that each attendee can then implement in his or her own community. If we can reconnect enough people with the selfless civic virtue of our forefathers, we as a nation will all be better off.

Our goal is to create a nation of Riflemen. We’d love for you to join us.

I just did one this passed October. You will love it. It was a lot of fun and I learned a lot. Most people use .22's but you could definitely use your M1a. You'll need a shooting mat, at least four mags, 500 rds, a GI web sling or equivalent and some other misc. things. They have a list posted. Be prepared to be sore after the whole thing. You are put into positions you aren't used to and there is a lot of up and down between the different shooting positions.

I've not decided what gun I'll take. Probably my 10/22 to make things easier on myself, but the M1 is definitely an option. I'm going to try and get out a shoot both this month to see which one I feel more comfortable with.

I've not decided what gun I'll take. Probably my 10/22 to make things easier on myself, but the M1 is definitely an option. I'm going to try and get out a shoot both this month to see which one I feel more comfortable with.

I've been involved with this program at my Club for close to ten years now (We were one of the first to host a AS in NYS) We usually do two a year April and Sept or Oct. The Ruger 10/22 is the most common rifle on the line! ( if you don't already have the auto-bolt release I would suggest it! ) As @ArmedCorgi mentioned 4 mags (I know there site says 2 but the rapid fire AQT is 40rds in 4 minutes, no time to reload!) Appleseed does sell the GI sling cheaper then I have seen at any Gun Show. As for a mat a Movers Blanket from Harbor Freight or Walmart would work just fine. You will be shooting at the AQT target at 25 meters with target size reduced to simulate shooting out to 100/200/300 and 400 yards.



You will enjoy this for sure we get a lot of return shooters that bring along family and friends when they come back!

I am a moron. 8x5=40. I mean the Appleseed course is based off traditional, WW2 vintage marksmanship techniques correct? Therfore the M1 Garand is the spiritually correct rifle to use?

I would bring an enbloc ammo belt for that class I think. Better than fumbling around in your pockets.
PPU makes decent Garand food at a decent price. For 30-06 anyway.

The only time you would be fumbling in your pocket would be the standing position, once you are in kneeling/sitting and the prone position mags/m1-clips would be index on your mat.

Hmnn. Well I got a buttstock pouch that holds two clips. I imagine that would be sufficient?

olongapooutfitter.com has a cartridge belt that holds 10 for $58. They also have a 8 clip carrying chest rig for $86. All hand made by a small shop in Alabama if I remember correctly. Seems to be battle ready constructed gear.

Look at that guy, all fumbling around in his pocket, looks down, fumbles some more, gets it out, orients it. With the pouch it's in the same place and oriented the same way everytime.
Also I can get to the pouches while keeping the rifle mounted. I don't keep anything in my pockets that I may need to get to quickly.

Oh, I'm ahead of you on that one! I got the buttstock pouches from him, very nice quality.
He also offers, or did, a Garand enbloc ammo satchel that looks very nice. Has a cross shoulder strap and also a strap that goes around the waist if you wish.

I was going through a buttstock pouch on everything phase at the time but this pouch on the Garand is actually pretty useful. Olongapo Outfitters makes good stuff. I'd still recommend this particular item.

The 10/22 is a wise choice and you won't be alone. Absolutely bring the M1as back up and you can always do another appleseed if you like it and that time use the M1. Going into it as a first timer, using the 10/22 is a more economical option as well as a more shoulder friendly one as well. Trust me, you will be sore all over after the first day, lol. I'm excited for you.

I belive, if @nortatoga can clarify, that Appleseed shoots are broken up in such a way that one can run the 10/22 most of the day and transition to another rifle for a portion.

You could certainly run the 10/22 on the first day and apply what you learned that day to using the M1 on the second day.

I looked back at the photo you posted of your firearms and I see that your 10/22 is still set-up with the factory sights which do not allow much adjustment. I would suggest that if you are going to shoot with open sights that you look into Tech-Sights they will give you a sight picture much like your M1 and they are very adjustable (get the adj tool also) I recommend the rail-mount ones should you ever want to put a scope on the rifle it's just one allen screw to remove.

I have the Tech Sights on a Marlin 795 and they have helped a lot. Easy to install and adjust ( agree that the tool is a must).
BTW, do you see many Marlins at Appleseed events? The 795 has a removable box mag rather than the Marlin 60 which has a tube mag.

A few but I only do shoots at my Club! The marlin 795 is a good rifle, I think they even make what is call the Liberty Rifle set up for Appleseed.

Interesting! I have been rather underwhelmed by the factory sights, but hadn't yet started playing dress up dolls with this gun, because I've heard there's no end to that rabbit hole. Something like the Tech Sights might work for me.
