After Politicians found out they could bribe the people with their own money. It was all over but the crying.

A standing army
Governmental Regulation that favor some and punish others
Excessive laws that restrict freedom for profit
Over policing
Taxation of some to give to others

The illusion that all is well in the country just means it is always 72 hours away from armed revolution.
