After 3-4 years of back and forth politically and in the media, my precinct is getting online with the body cameras this week.

The training is going on this week, with the cops wearing them starting after they attend. Since the city hasn’t made an agreement with my union yet, the Sergeants are not wearing them at this time. We just supervise their use by the cops. One of my guys is wearing it today but I have no clue what to do yet because I don’t go until Thursday.

I can say this: how this plays out will determine how much longer I stay on the job. I can retire next July 1st. If this is a disaster, I’m out! Amazon here I come! Lol

Amazon is a sweatshop. Trust me, you don't want to work for them. They offered one of the guys I work with about $200k to try to pull him from the job, and he's probably going to turn it down despite it being something like a 25%ish bump, because of the rep they have amongst developers.

Interesting. I've only heard good things but then again the sources aren't that close to me. One of my high school acquaintances who I've recently become friends with again is hiring supervisors for a new Amazon facility here on Staten Island and offered me a salary well above what I am making now. I'd take it if I was closer to retirement. He needs to fill his positions in 3 months and I can't leave for 15.

I’m 100% for cameras, but the administration of the program is looking to be an onerous disaster. We don’t just wear them, use them, then dock them for upload. There’s far more to it. The cop has to go online and label every single clip. Te supervisor has to review much of it based on criteria too lengthy to get into here. Certain incidents now require Sgt’s to collect the name of every cop on scene. In some cases in my department, that could easily go over 100 people.

We hashed this out many times here. Civilians think its a joke to just slap cameras on, call it accountability and think everything is going to be ok. We know there’s more to it. For example, how will all that cataloging get done without accruing overtime in a busy house (or becoming detrimental to manpower)? It’s impossible.

I’ll see how it plays out but so far, this doesn’t bode well for me staying 13 more years as I planned to.

There are a few upsides though. The job is actually encouraging us to constantly notify civilians and other cops alike when the camera is turned on. That’s a great thing. Also its constantly recording on a loop so if you dont turn it on “immediately” when an encounter happens suddenly, once you do the prior 30 seconds will be available as well. That’s a great feature that addresses one of the possible issues that we discussed right on this forum.

I don't quite understand. Pokemon Go can know when you're within 20 feet of a location, yet we can't have body cameras just use the GPS in a squad car or phone to label the footage by location? That would make it far easier. Just time + location + officer name. That's really all it should take, and all of that should be simply to set / collect given modern technology.

Also, assuming you had those three points of data, that should make it pretty much a "dock and go" sort of a deal. You never know what footage you'll need, so better it just all be dumped to storage anyway. It's not even really that complicated. We're talking about using something like Amazon S3 (Cloud File Storage), which has EXTREMELY low cost to upload files into, and only becomes cost prohibitive when you download the clips back out of S3. Considering the only time you'd want to download the clips from S3 would be basically to review footage for a criminal case, that means it's pretty cost effective. You can also set access permissions, so some people can perhaps upload their footage, but maybe not modify it without permission once uploaded, etc.

You don't have to tell me. I'm sure there are multiple options available which would be far less onerous. Can't have that though, this is the government we're talking about and they have money to spend!

I've never taken / never would take a supervisor role, so not sure about that. Also, facility and IT roles are totally different. IT roles, for what they're hiring for, normally entail you going to to the headquarters of another business that wants to consume amazon services, and helping them build out their infrastructure / advising them on the technical specifications. It seems great, but you have to remember the more individual businesses you deal with, the more horse shit you deal with too. A lot of times you'll come in, explain how to do something properly, and they'll just not want to do that. So you're stuck doing some something in a half-assed / incorrect way because that's how they want to do it. It's just frustrating.

Their office is pretty ok in Manhattan (I've been there, it's got a full cafeteria with cooks and everything so people never have to leave.) Still, it's got a lot of bureaucracy. Controlling the lights is even locked down. They had to get a department just to enable the lights for them in a room when I went there for a business meeting.

As someone who ocassionally dabbles in databreach/privacy/infogov type cases on a professional basis, I have concerns about where all this data goes, how it's secured, who has access to it, and what retention / destruction policies and protocols are in place.

As I said, you can set user permissions on S3 buckets. Some may only have upload permission. Some only view permission. Etc.

From what I can tell so far, as a Sgt I can view ANY video recorded by any body camera in this department through an app on my department iphone.

If I were you I'd be running out the door next July.I know about a half dozen cops who wanted to stay for the 30,but this administration caused them to leave at the 20 yr mark.Big difference in money,I know,but better to take what you got before these scumbags take it from you.Staten Island used to be a "tit" assignment,not anymore.
