Do yourself a favor and find someone/somewhere where you can leave any and all handguns prior to moving here.

"Stashing" them at your folks house if you're talking about in NY, isnt going to fly- unless they have a pistol permit- and even then you need to import them into the state via an FFL and get them on the folk's permit before they can take possession.

Boy, do I feel that. Born and raised Californian that I am, I’d like a bit more cross-pollination. Cali is, and will always feel, like home to me, so I think I know where you’re coming from.

California is absolutely amazing. Last time I was there as a trucker, I got into a really nerdy discussion with some Hispanic gents about AR builds and their disgusts about Cali laws.

California is a place which isn’t only diverse in racial ways, it’s complex in its politics. Look up how it distubutes its water.

And that’s just a primer. Some dirty stuff ensues.

Come on in, We need more people to pay our high taxes as the majority of the working folks are moving. 10% state income tax . We are going to have a tremendous short coming with all the wild spending our Governor has done. And with the covid and him shutting everything down that did not get all the revenue they expected from Sales Tax so they are going to have to make it up some how so we will need all the working folks like your self to help pay down the spending spree . Keep in mind our governor said if your a pro gun, pro life conservative there is no place for you here No Place for us

Hello all. This seems to be the place I need! A bit about me: I’m a mid-30s family guy, and an over the road truck driver. I’m born and raised in California, but didn’t get into guns until I moved to Texas when I was 20. Cars are my real passion, and while I will admit I am, at heart, a desert rat and would make my home there, we are going to be moving to the Rochester area at some point for family reasons. While I understand some basics about the legal structure there, I’m confused enough that I don’t even completely know what to ask. Lurking a little bit here and elsewhere, it’s kind of hard to get a grasp on it. My only experience with owning firearms, as I said, has been in Texas, which is pretty close to being as libertarian as it gets as far as the law is concerned. Half the guns I have bought or sold have been in parking lots with zero paperwork involved. I’m not a super gun nut - cars take that place in my life - but I have started to think about a small C&R collection at some point, along with keeping the kinda strange little pile of guns I have already, so I might as well get on the legal side of that.

Anyhow, I look forward to chatting with you and getting to know the community!

Welcome to the forum and yes the laws here are complicated and perilous. In NYS even when you’re practicing a legal activity “Purchase an Other Firearm” most officers don’t know the law or make wrong interpretations. Probably one of the reasons why people are rioting today. Anyways like the other guys stated if it’s fun it’s illegal, looks awesome illegal, even when legal if it’s in the grey area it’s illegal. I’m always trying to find loopholes but in this great state of NY no one wants to be a test case.

I have a lot of complaints (all gov/tax related) but I moved to Rochester area over a decade ago. We have no family, have very mobile jobs, and we still haven't found a reason to leave yet. I'm not sure I can retire here based on the tax structure, but we'll see.

Understand that NY is a hopelessly democratic state and will be until the end of time, but that's only because of the concentrated city centers. As you hit suburbs you go from hardcore democrats to a pretty even mix, and as you get to rural it's heavily republican. The mindset of rochester greater area largely will not be the same as NYC.

Once you've read them, you may need to go to law school to understand them.

Welcome! I would highly recommend that you do NOT live within the city limits. The city has a much more restrictive attitude towards pistol permits than the county. If you live outside the city limits then you are much more likely to get a permit and to receive it sooner. It's been a while since I obtained mine but you will need to establish some sort of residency first. For the permit you will need 3-4 character witnesses from this area that have known you for at least 6 months (maybe a year - like I said it's been a while). The witnesses cannot be family members. As others have said you will need to leave your pistols with someone when you move here. Once you obtain your permit then you will need them shipped to a local FFL so that you can pick them up. I don't believe they can be shipped straight to your door.

The suburbs are the place to be. The city itself, like most cities in the state is rapidly devolving into a third world hellhole. The city school district has a huge budget deficit due to some (cough cough) shady accounting practices. As a result they have fired teachers and reduced services. This will have a downstream impact on the city for years if not decades to come.

The local paper is a piece of kotex that has been getting thinner by the week due to the fact few people pay for a newspaper these days. The editorial board of the paper has decided that all of the city's problems are directly the result of the racists that live in the suburbs even though they can't quite explain how. They just know. The constant browbeating might also be a reason their subscriber base has eroded so quickly but self reflection does not appear to be one of their strong points.

The rochester region, like most of upstate NY is absolutely beautiful in the summer and fall. Winters are a bitch. Get used to the phrase "lake effect snow" which means it snows like crazy in very localized areas even without a major storm. As a general rule the closer you are to lake ontario the more snow you will get. Your attitude towards snow should help you decide where to live.

I gather break-action doubles and bolt-action guns aren’t really a concern? Planning on selling my Marlin 336, but I presume it wouldn’t be a big hassle to bring in either?

As for semi-auto, my interests lie in circa WWII things like a Garand, G43, SVT40, SKS, Etc. Pistols notwithstanding.

I avoid black as much as possible. Almost everything I've been taking lately is either some sort of lightly colored tan / coyote brown, or worst case OD green in as much of an area as possible. Socks, bag, everything.

If it hits the ground, I want to be able to see a tick on it for tick checks.

So, ticks are a thing? I remember hearing about it being really bad in CT, but hadn’t thought much about WNY in that regard. That’s great stuff that no one I’ve spoken to has ever brought up.

Yeah, I’m just disappointed at the majority of political discourse in our nation these days. The fact that I’m politically homeless and don’t particularly care for the demican/republicrat duopoly means I make it that much harder for myself in any discussion. So, I choose to mostly ignore that part, especially online where lack of vocal tone and body language cues plus relative anonymity make good discussion of serious but potentially emotional issues problematic at best.
