You probably thought I was busting chops at first, didn't you?
Honestly, I don’t know what to think anymore.

I doubt that, but there’s still a lot of papering.
NY is exclusively for family reasons. Since I’m not really into the most modern tacticool stuff, I don’t actually possess anything which I currently understand as prohibited, but it will still take a bit of papering to bring my stuff.
I’m mostly interested in smokeless firearms from their advent in the 1880s until basically the end of the battle rifle in the 1950s. There’s not much which puts me at odds with “SAFE” Act provisions, though I don’t quite know how they interact in some edge cases.
Article 35 sounds like it’s worth deeper reading, though.
"FAMILY REASONS" ?
I moved from a wonderful full acre, large, brand new home, in a nearly rural community, to a rundown 1960's slab house, built on a postage stamp, so the missus could be near her folks.
Then they died (may they rest in peace), and I can never return.
Is what it is. I got a good delay, those who want to talk me out of it have about as much ammo in the pouch as I do.
Hello all. This seems to be the place I need! A bit about me: I’m a mid-30s family guy, and an over the road truck driver. I’m born and raised in California, but didn’t get into guns until I moved to Texas when I was 20. Cars are my real passion, and while I will admit I am, at heart, a desert rat and would make my home there, we are going to be moving to the Rochester area at some point for family reasons. While I understand some basics about the legal structure there, I’m confused enough that I don’t even completely know what to ask. Lurking a little bit here and elsewhere, it’s kind of hard to get a grasp on it. My only experience with owning firearms, as I said, has been in Texas, which is pretty close to being as libertarian as it gets as far as the law is concerned. Half the guns I have bought or sold have been in parking lots with zero paperwork involved. I’m not a super gun nut - cars take that place in my life - but I have started to think about a small C&R collection at some point, along with keeping the kinda strange little pile of guns I have already, so I might as well get on the legal side of that.
Anyhow, I look forward to chatting with you and getting to know the community!
PS - any way to switch out of mobile view? It doesn’t play nice on my phone.
Please stay far away from here. Pennsylvania or NH a better choice if you must come to this region. We have a pompous, arrogant, 2A hating clown shoe for a governor. If you must come be mindful of the county you choose as well as it district attorney!
Know this is an older thread and post but wanted to post a small correction. Your references ( for Monroe county) must have known you for a minimum of 3 years. Have the permit applied in hand, and stated on it. Playing the waiting game myself. No concern at all. Semi-auto's and hand guns are the big thing. If it's semi-auto and has a detachable mag, it cannot have any features (pistol grip, adjustable stock, muzzle device, bayonet lug, Etc.). If it is semi-auto with a fixed mag (sks) it is good to go. With handguns, there is a whole process you have to go through. I don't know if they make an exception for people moving here but included in the application process is the requirement to have 4 character references whom you've know for 4 or 5 years. Each county has slightly different add on requirements, but the basic application is the same state wide. The length of time it takes to get you pistol permit varies from county to county. If you do have pistols you'd like to bring into ny, you'd have to keep them either out of state with an ffl or relative, or a nys ffl that is willing to hold them until you get your permit. At which time, you'd have to have them sent to an ffl in nys to do the transfer, then you'd have to take the transfer paperwork to your county clerk permit office and have your permit amended so that it lists all the handguns. Then you'd take your amended permit and purchase coupon back to the ffl that is holding your guns and they will then give them to you.
I'm good with waiting. Not too much longer anyway. Feburary for me. Paperwork in hand, no worries. Waiting is actually beneficial in my situation. In your specific case - sure.
In general the 3 year rule violates the licensing requirements in the penal law and effectively prevents people from obtaining a license for 3 years that have just moved here. That is not prescribed for within the law.
A lawyer would probably not be needed if you raised a stink. It's not a battle they'll want to fight.
And for Rensselaer county it's 5 years. From Rensselaer county's pistol permit instructions: "You will need four (4) character references. All references must live in the Capital District, be at least 21 years of age, not related to you, and known to you for at least five (5) years. References residing outside NYS are not acceptable. . They must PRINT their information in the appropriate boxes, clearly print their zip code and sign their names."Know this is an older thread and post but wanted to post a small correction. Yeah its funny that way. I understand. Originally from erie county, and its different from Erie to Monroe. Wait time is vastly different across counties also. My understanding is that pre covid, monroe was running anywhere from 6-10 months. Conversely, I was told Allegheny County could be as fast as 6 weeks. NYC, well, probably never. And for Rensselaer county it's 5 years. From Rensselaer county's pistol permit instructions: "You will need four (4) character references. Maybe I misrepresented what I was originally trying to convey. My point was that about the only thing that is the same state wide is the application. Each county is different. Some counties want to access your social media accounts, some want you to meet with a judge, some want you to meet with an officer, some don't, Etc., Etc..
Oh man, it's total bullshit any way you slice it and just like every gun law they pass in this state, it's confusing and nonsensical. Where are you in the process?Yeah its funny that way. Pre application. Have to wait out reference requirements ( 3 years, only known people in county 2 1/2). Patience is a virtue I guess.Oh man, it's total bullshit any way you slice it and just like every gun law they pass in this state, it's confusing and nonsensical. Where are you in the process?
Prayers brother. Family first. All this and it looks like our move is delayed. My Pa is having some heart issues, it looks like we will be staying in Texas for a while now.

Yeah. Thanks. Found out a couple of days ago that on top of his AFib, he has esophageal cancer, stage 3. So that’s not going to turn out well. Needless to say, I am pretty firmly anchored here for the time being.
Hope everything is well man. Wish the best. All this and it looks like our move is delayed. My Pa is having some heart issues, it looks like we will be staying in Texas for a while now.
