So post up historically significant calibers that you own and guns that use them.

I'll kick it off. 35 Remington. I have a Marlin 336 that was given to me by my FIL. The round has taken countless deer over the years and is widely recognized as a decent for brush. Possibly second to the 30-30. Bonnie and Clyde were killed with a Remington Model 8 chambered in 35 Rem....

30-06. If one was allowed to have guns in NY, such a caliber might fit in a 1903 Springfield, a 1917 Enfield, an M1 Garand, a 1919a4 semi-auto, or a nearly limitless number of bolt action and semi-auto rifles made over the last 110+ years.
Historical significance? Is that not enough, LOL? I'm pretty sure there isn't a land animal on earth that hasn't been taken with an '06.
From what I understand, It was originally designed as the 30-03. Obviously the 1903 Springfield could not have been designed to fire a round made 3 years later!
The 30-03 sucked. Modeled after the popular Krag cartridge for U.S. Military purposes, it was poorly engineered with too hot a powder and a 220 grain bullet. Not only was it useless at any kind of distance, but the fast powder and heavy bullet burned barrels quickly. The U.S. knew they had a problem in short order.
The 30-06 was born in 1906 to replace that miserable 30-03. A lighter weight spitzer bullet (150gr?) and better designed powder would make it a formidable round for the future.
The '06 was designed slightly shorter than the '03. All '03 Springfields were recalled for the retrofit. Using the '06 in an unmodified '03 meant poor accuracy. Going forward, new guns made for the '06 wouldn't even chamber the longer '03 round.
There were a small number of 1903 Springfields made for the '03 that somehow escaped being re-chambered for the '06. If you come across one, it is quite the collectable.

Happy .30-06 hunting (for "whatever")...

Didn't know the Bonnie and Clyde story. I have a 336 .35 Rem made in Connecticut. Nice rifle.

22LR. They probably have taken more game than any other caliber.

As for what guns of mine go with that, several but I am not going to list them here. At least 2 of the makes/models I own are historically significant as military trainers.

Regardless of one's opinions of the 5.56x45 I don't think there is any gainsaying of being or becoming a historical cartridge. It is the first high velocity intermediate cartridge in service, and it has been in service for over 50 years now. Its one of the most popular centerfire cartridges as well. I have more 5.56x45 than any other ammo type.

My daughter shares her birthday with the offical in service date of the .30-06: October 15th. Since it happens to be my favorite round, that's pretty significant to me.

My 1919A4 is 7.62 NATO. I know they started their life as 30-06 but didn't all of them get re-chambered? I heard of converting them to German 8mm back when Nazi ammo was almost free - guess those days are gone now. ;-( Mine was made by General Motors (the Saginaw steering gear machine shop). I love my 1919A4; but I wish I kept my Ma-Deuce. I couldn't say no to the retarded profit I was offered on the AN-M2. But fuck it- I am *NEVER* selling my 1919A4. Here's my princess:

The 8 mm lebel is definitely one of historical importance. Truly along lines with the 30.06 even if it was short lived. The era that it ushered in is nearly 150 years old.

Its large chamfered rim and extreme taper, both vestiges of its development for safety in tube magazines (nose to primer risk), led to the caliber being unsuitable for double stack box magazines, and imbued large capacity magazines (for LMG use) with a high amount of curvature, with some forming a complete semicircle.

This is true, but it's historical significants is the fact that it was the first smokeless powder round adopted by any military.

35 Rem is a good one @cgrutt. I reload it for my buddy, and he has a model 8 and a Thompson pistol in 35 Rem. That is a beast. Really surprised at the drop off of that one. Even components for it are harder to find.I knew the Bonnie and Clyde thing. The actual Model 8 used in that shooting is in a museum somewhere.

22 is definitely a huge one too.

I'll go with my mainstay in these types of threads, 10MM. 10MM, and the resulting 40 really started the modern day caliber wars. We would not have nearly as many modern handgun calibers today without the 10MM. 40 would go, 357 Sig would be dropped (and unintentionally fire..ba dum tiss), I'd wager 45 GAP would go, etc.

Got my G20C in it, will have a G40 soon enough, after that damn Beretta INOX that has my name on it...

Plus Tom Clancy loved that caliber in his books, and I always get a stiffy when I read a passage in his books about that MP5/10 or a 10MM pistol.
