Every single one of these countries had a higher standard of living than people in the Soviet Union. This is another example of how full of shit was our narrative. People in the colonies don't live better than in countries who colonize them. This is a bold face lie in every sense, direct or indirect. Soviet Union was paying a huge part of their defense budget at the expense of Soviet people. They were also getting natural resources from Russia for much less than what they are paying now. Anecdotal stories by your friends, who reside here don't mean anything. They will just say what is expected from them. It starts with qualifying for a refugee status.
How ironic that Soviet propaganda called the radio station Free Europe, the voice from the swamp.

Wasn't Russia trying to annex, or at least gain political control over, a significant portion of the Ukrain recently?

I could have sworn that was all over the news even as recently as 2019.

Feathering our own nest at the expense of other nations makes the citizenry happy. Arguably that's the way to go, but that doesn't make the country a good player on International arena. We live better therefore we are a better country is overused non-sequitur. If Hitler succeeded in conquering Europe, he could have made the same claim.

Maybe if the West wasn't on a mission to destroy Soviet Union, Stalin wouldn't need to be paranoid and mistrusting. Stalin's purges didn't come out of nothing. What exactly did other superpowers do to oppose Stalin that averted an exploitation of another country? We already know if Western democracies cooperated with Stalin on Czechoslovakia, there wouldn't even be a blitzkrieg through Europe. It wasn't just an appeasement, it was a plan to push Hitler to attack Soviet Union and the plan backfired. While Bolsheviks were Hitler's ideological enemies, Hitler also remembered how Germany was raped during the Treaty of Versailles. This was done by Wester democracies, Russia didn't part take.

Ukraine is a Russian territory and it will go back at some point as it always did. Small minority of Western Ukrainians and their dark history don't set the agenda for the entire region. Poland can take them back.
Ukrainian diaspora in the U.S. and Canada is out of touch. Their influence in Ukraine is fading.

There is no precedent for a country winning the war and losing its own territory. There was never any animosity between the Russians and Ukrainians over most of Ukraine. It's artificially injected from outside, it's not going to last. Same people, same culture, very similar language.

I was born and raised in Ukraine. My grandfathers fought for it. I sat on the same potty with Russians and Ukrainians in daycare. We were cutting school together, hiking, chasing girls and so on. Albania wasn't even a part of Soviet Block. Relations between Soviet Union and Albania were strained to say the least. I guess your propaganda training missed that.

History is a teacher. Doesn't matter who's giving the class. You can read the books on Julisus Ceaser and the problems and solutions, sucess and failures That he had and learn from them . Tacticians still study tactics of Genghis khan and William Sherman. Poets study the best poets from middle ages to today. Politicians study the best politicians from Ancient Greece to today.

The Germans are the go to example of government atrocity, even though there are far worse examples.


I am sure that in American schools today, all thr other atrocities are barely mentioned, to leave more time to focus on our own problems.
