Mindfulness is a critical component of safe gun handling. Once in a training session I had a piece of very hot 5.56 brass get stuck under my collar against my bare neck, I finished the drill, kept the weapon pointed downrange and with my offhand frantically fished the little brass lava glob out. I had several burn blisters by the time I got home, but I didn't ND. We can never lose our muzzle awareness no matter what is happening.
I posted this before in another thread but...
I went to shoot a new Glock 45 on a Friday night once at my usual range. I had never been there on a Friday night before. I was about 75 rounds in when I heard something going on in the lane to the left of me. I had on those ear muffs with the microphones that let you hear quieter sounds. The guy was telling them to keep it pointed down range and not touch the trigger until ready to fire. It was an AR. It was clear they've never fired a gun before. They were very young. 19 or 20 I would guess. I packed my shit and left as fast as I could. I did a burnout in the driveway. I don't like that shit. The place was filled with "city" people. Not sure if that is amateur night or what, but that's not for me. I've even left stores if there's sketchy people looking at ammo. Saw a guy once talking to himself. BYE!!!!
I got lucky and had a piece of brace land behind my eye pro.. it was the only pair of glasses I could find that day, not the best fitting.. it some how fell down from the top but got stuck behind the glasses on my check bone.. .

Ive told this story before but......
Ive only been to a couple club ranges in my life. I go with friends who are members.
One time there was a guy sitting at a table telling his buddies why he prefers revolvers over auto loading handguns.
One of his points was that revolvers are very easy to count your rounds when shooting. That way he said you would be safer.
I did not follow his logic but hey, you do you pal.
Exactly 5 minutes later he had shot his friend in the ankle.
He explained that he thought he counted 6, but must have miscounted. Then he said he pulled the trigger to make sure the gun was "safe".
The range owner told him to save his breath for the cops.
This is an absolutely true story.

This comment in no way shifts the blame in any way but why was that guy sweeping brass while shooters were on the line? I have never seen anyone sweeping brass while shooters were on the line, and I’ve been in several indoor ranges. Is that common in bigger indoor ranges?

What often amazes me is what passes for common sense at ranges. When I ran a commercial range we enforced a strict dress code, including requiring closed toe shoes and tops that "protected" our female shooters from collecting brass in their bras. The new range that I worked at had young guys that often encouraged their friends to bring in "eye candy" to shoot with. The range officers would ignore common sense and soon enough some hottie was jumping around trying to get rid of some hot brass. A weekly occurrence especially on the weekends. One of our female employees brought this to the attention of the owners and the rules started to change.

I caught a really bad ricochet last week at the range off a steel plate. 9mm from 10 yards. Felt like a hammer hit my arm.

Had a piece of brass fly down the back of my shirt at a defensive carbine class a while back. No fun. Learned right then and there best place on the line is all the way to left lol. Life lessons....
