Any idea yet what fur prices are bringing? Seriously thinking about getting in some coon hunting this year.

I am guessing they aren't going to bring much. Coon been in the shitter and doesn't look like they will climb out soon....my main reason for trapping them still is the practice and to help keep the numbers of them down on some properties I hunt.

DP= DOG proof...its a trap that a coon reaches in to get bait and whee it grabs and pulls the trigger they get caught by the arm. A canine can't grab and pull the trigger so they are called dog proof traps.
I use cable to tether them to a small tree, usually when caught the cable tightens and they can't climb up a tree. For some reason this one didn't cinch down and a coon climbed up about 8 feet high and managed to get out of the trap, leaving it wrapped up in the tree.

I only have leg hold sets out right now. I do run body grips aka connibears but have non set at the moment....I have this and next week off work but leave Thursday to head up to deer camp for rifle opener so I put 5 canine sets out with 5 dp's. I like to put some dog proofs with strong coon bait to try and keep them from getting into the canine sets.

Possum are pretty easy, it was a back foot catch so I put my boot over his arse and other leg pulling the trapped leg away from him I can depress the trap levers freeing the leg and he walks away. If it is a more aggessive animal that needs to be released for some reason I jeep a catch pole in my truck. It is basically a nuse on a pole I can look the head and pin them down with my body weight and remove the trap from them.

A good sized prime coon fleshed and dried with out being downgraded at all I'm guessing $3 average. Fox maybe the $12-$15 area.

Wow, back in the seventies I coon hunted a lot, and was getting $35 and up for a coon hide. From what I understand there was a world wide craze for fur coats, then the peta whackos started attacking people wearing fur and pouring paint or ink on them the prices began to fall.

My personal opinion with the fur decline is a combination of factors. The anti tossing paint on folks expensive coats is a big one, fur farming is another. People started raising fur bearing animals which didn't help wild fur prices. Also I think a big one is the synthetic leather and even fur material they have come up with over the last 20 years put a hurtin on real fur.

Had to pull my sets today as I won't be around until Sunday. Had 1 possum, had an empty sprung trap at a k9 set not sure if I had a dig up or pull out but was disappointed as I couldn't remake it.

My kids want coonskin caps and deerhide clothes.
It's nothing too crazy. I want to make a pair of caps out of fox and raccoon. I wouldn't mind a couple pelts to put up on the wall either.
I'm going to be putting out a DP trap or two for some raccoons this weekend. What is the your bait of choice for raccoons? Preferably one that won't attract cats. The neighbor has a few barn cats, so I want to avoid fish. Something sweet? Pieces of jelly donut? marshmallows? corn with honey or jelly?

Dp's I usually put some of the small marshmallows or cheap cat food in. I wouldn't worry about catching a cat, unless you have a push/pull trigger I don't think they'd set it off. If they do just let them go, no harm.

Well I managed to sneak out of the house and get a total of 3 k9 sets, 6 Dp's, and 3 mink sets out. Gonna try and add on tomorro when I got check.
