Jesus you made out. After basic and AIT (same drill seargeants, same base etc) before we shipped out we had to clean our weapon before storage. Had not been cleaned since day one of basic. Take a seat, no rush, you ain't getting outta here for at least two hours, and we will be inspecting all weapons, and boy did they ever.

Yeah, I'll I ever wanna shoot is my AR. One is chrome lined, the new one is nitrided. I'll shoot anywhere from 500 to 1,000 rounds of 5.56, mostly milspec type, ammo in a range session.
I have a Ballistic Advantage Nitrided barrel on the new AR, I belive its just button rifled, its also 4150 steel.
My ARs pull defensive duty so I take the time for prudent preventative maintenance. Its important to check for wear and function too, and cleaning time is a good opportunity for this.

When it comes to blued gun steel, oil protects the metal from a very powerful corrosive-oxygen. Oxygen is the most powerful corrosive in the universe. Oil prevents oxygen molecules from contacting the metal molecules. Stainless steel is an alloy that contains a larger amount of chromium. The chromium molecules form a 'shield' that minimizes the steel's contact with oxygen. Stainless steel is relatively more rust resistant than carbon steel alloys, but will corrode if left unprotected over time. A thin coat of oil is the best policy whether carbon or stainless steel.
Not for nothing but the chrome lined Daniel Defense rifle seems to be slightly more accurate, perhaps its better to say more consistent, than the nitrided NYGF build rifle. But its a pretty small difference. Difficult to say for sure using red dots. I was definitely getting somewhat smaller groups on the SR-1 targets at 100 yards with the DD though. Given that its the DD I wanna scope and that the NYGF is setup as a light, fast close range carbine I am fine with this.
Like I said, prolly another 200 rounds or therabouts before needing to dump some oil in the action. Steel case does run dirtier though.
Amazes me that the gas system will pass that much carbon and remain functional in spite of carbon buildup. 1000 rounds is a lot of burnt powder.
The carbon doesn't accumulate in the tube while its still hot. It precipitates out and coats the BCG when it expands and cools in the action having done its work. I routinely shoot 1000 rounds between cleanings on my AR with nary a problem, I gets awful sooty in there though. I dunno how this new one will do, I've about 400 rounds through it, first time session, with no problems, no stoppages. The AR is really a very reliable gun despite its reputation.
No, not saying a lax cleaning regimen will damage the gun per say, though a lack of oil will leave the gun susceptible to corrosion. But a dirty gun may not function at its best, or at all if extremely dirty. Every design is different. CETMEs and related get very dirty fast but'll run like that for a long, long time, AKs can be neglected damn near indefinitely, in the AR the carbon fouling will eventually create enough drag on the bcg to cause stoppages, in a revolver excessive fouling on the front of the cylinder and around the forcing cone can also cause problems. I understand this is an academic discussion but these toys of ours are so expensive and they mean so much to us, not to mention that our very lives and the lives of others may depend on there reliable function that I see no reason to neglect even basic maintenance.
I got a little bottle of that too, Hoppes busts up carbon faster though.
