Actually swords, nunchakus, bo staff, sai, escrima sticks, etc... are legal to posses if you use them for parade, demonstration, training etc. Pretty sure it's there... So join a martial arts association and make sure you keep your dues current 
no registration required. Can't help it if you get attacked while happening to be carrying them in your bag and defend yourself! Lol... In your car, under your seat, would not work out well though... Just saying!

Ya only plastic fake is legal. You can NOT legally carry or have REAL Nunchucku in vehicle or on person in NYS. Been in Martial Arts since I was 24, I'm 60.....

i think there listed as a no go too in NYS ... even thou we made them in highschool back in the late 70's early 80's .. may be still be a few stuck in the shop class ceiling too from the jocks in the class that made some LOL .. i got pretty good throwing them ...

Ya not legal.....
Me too (trained long time)... And never had a problem! But then again, never used them (or needed to) either. And mine are from Okinawa which I wouldn't want confiscated but still had them with me in my bag to/fro training. Trained 5 days per week (then) and never worried.
Just use the "Comey/Clinton" defense... You're not "INTENDING" to do anything "ILLEGAL" with them, so there's no crime!
