How to get traffic here

With the take off I'm seeing here, I'm wondering if this site doesn't already have a higher rate of new posts than the old one.

Maybe one of the old mods who knows how many posts a day the old site saw on average could chime in ?

These sites really are all about the user generated content, so it's whichever site the users generate content for.

As for attracting the "new" users, if the content ends up here they will follow.

Members (like myself) need to post gun related topics not just political commentary. After all that is the main reason why we are here. I do like BG's idea of promoting the site. I think we all need to go all in and spread the word to get people here.

Ive been really pushing the site via sending pms to active members art the old place, as that place slows people will wonder where everyone is so we all have to spread the word.

But reaching a wider audience is important. Ill pm the staff with an idea.

I plan on devoting a lot of time and resources into this place to help it grow and continue to grow. Search Engine Optimization is very important, but word of mouth is also important. Everyone here has been amazing in helping to spread the word and that is invaluable (thanks everyone). I am also working on promotional material to help spread the word locally and already have permission from the local range by me and a local FFL to post it there. Once I am done designing some flyers, etc. I will post them here in case anyone else wants to try to post some things at local ranges and stores. I have also already been in contact with other entities regarding helping to spread the word and the support I've received has been huge... Almost like everyone agrees this was overdue.

It will take a lot of work, but it's nothing that can't be done or that I will not try my hardest on. Myself and the other admins are devoted to this place and will do what it takes to see it prosper and become a home for all NY gun enthusiasts alike.

If you want a wider audience you must consider who you want to come here.Now I know I am the new guy around but since so many old names are flocking from NYF it seems to me your going to get the exact same topics and conversations.
I would AVOID or at least LIMIT the Fuac and all the conspiracy stuff or at least confine it to specific places or areas and I will defend that opinion this way.The topics can create some extreme feelings and opinions that could give SOME prospects pause about becoming members or endorsing this site.
Now Politics and controversy can never be eliminated but if you want the site to grow you must look at what kept the NYF the way it was .Some people avoid the name calling and the absolute extremism produce by the outspoken members or as some describe the "Type A people". Just because some don't share the exact enthusiasm in certain areas as some outspoken members they may avoid becoming involved in topics that they excel in because of bad experiences.
This site might become tagged as so far of a conspiracy site can that some will avoid it and again it will stagnate.
Now I am all for 2A .constitution,Bill of rights, Free speech and all that is America . Against the Safe act and all that stands for and totally believe that the current Government is as corrupt as can be .Now that being said there is a place and time for those topics and discussions but not in every thread on the site nor as the absolute most commented topics.
If you want more people to come there has to be gun talk as well as politics and other topics as in the sites name. You must get across to those extreme type A people that diversity and Freedom of speech and thought is what makes this country great and when they degrade ,humiliate and stomp on the ideas of the less outspoken members that they they them selves are doing exactly what the Government is doing to us now. This will bring in new blood and sponsors from this state who want to be associated with this site, the kind of people who will be loyal to this site and it's Ideals if you don't do these things then you are bound to repeat the past site not saying that is was a bad place I enjoyed some political topics but it was no longer a gun site but a political site and it is sad to say not all Ny gun owners enjoy political discussions constant vulgarity or disparaging remarks because they don't subscribe to the same conspiracy theory as the mega posters .
Moderator is a responsibility to be a referee not just a name tag . When a firm hand is called for then it should be dispensed quickly and fairly as should be standing to the side to let the topic flow. Sometimes a Moderator must put their own opinions aside for the better good of the site or discussion.
I realize most of these things I have said will be commented on and probably very negatively I am sure, but I personally feel that this site has a opportunity to be a great place for political and firearm discussions if only a measure of responsibility is taken by the owners as well as we the members.It might be the owners and Admins and Moderators that entice members or sponsors but it is we the members our attitudes towards others and the topics we bring to bare that will convince others to join us here and magnify our voices, ideals and our visions for a GREAT SITE.

I was thinking about going to the gun shows. Unfortunately, this weekend is way too close. There are a few shows around the Rochester area that I was planning on attending.

Yes I agree that content is what will ultimately drive the long term success of the site. Lets get some project threads going, more range reports, product reviews that sort of thing. Lets get some stuff that will attract people using google search and such. The "other place" was such a repository of knowledge before it devolved into a giant political dirge. The SAFE ACT was and is a terrible, horrible thing but lets use this site as an opportunity to move on and share our love of firearms. I once did a pretty comprehensive comparo of buckshot shells and I've wanting to do another. Maybe I should post some thoughts on what my experiences are on getting back into CCing, what works and what doesn't for me. Lets get technical folks that should drive some search traffic!

I can tell you one reason why people go to firearms forums and why many good members were lost on the other side even before the whole unSAFE act fiasco:

TO TALK ABOUT FIREARMS RELATED SUBJECTS!

So if you have a gun forum in your domain name they will come to talk about that and stick to it. Even find some specialty's. I can give you examples that draw dozens.
But what is not good is to have a gun forum to find out the Jerry Springer show of the NYS politics or whatever other social experiments one might want to conduct.
- Stick to subjects.
- Add value
- Be firm about your direction.

...and things will happen with a bit of collaboration from everyone. All those things were gone because lack of interest from owners and/or forums gurus.

Open and managing a forum takes a lot of time and effort so it must be planted, watered and cherished.

It only takes a few mad rebels and some abandonment to trash everything.

...and nobody is saying one cannot have fun. I like humor and good mojo but I also like to find and share value.

It comes to a time in life where if:

- It doesn't make me happy
- It doesn't give me value or
- It doesn't make me money

I don't want it, I am not interested!!

Beware of long threads that are really about nothing. At least Senfield's show about Nothing was actually funny.

Now we can talk about the marketing plans!! LOL

After some further thought, maybe a content wanted thread for thise that want want to see something they themselves cannot supply. I would like to see stuff from our amature knife maker folks for example.
I am also planning on doing a range report on my Shield and PPQ when I get back home. What type of distances do folks think would best representatives of capability. My marksmanship sucks though, just as a forewarning.

Well, I haven't been able to get to NYF in a long time due to it coming up as malicious and my work won't let me bypass it. Got a message from someone talking about this forum and how we are neighbors. Nice to be able to lurk again. I don't post much but its nice to read things. Just letting you know that worked to get me here.

I hear you brother. I too would like to see firearm related questions and such but the sad truth is unless you are into relics and bolt guns, there really isn't much to talk about since almost every modern gun that comes out besides pistols, we cannot have.

Good question. I won't try and speak for NYGuns or Hex. I don't think anything's wrong with Avid Arms. I had two main reasons for teaming up with the guys here instead of joining the other site, and these aren't anything personal to cgrutt or USMCveteran. They're both good guys and strong Second Amendment supporters. First, I wasn't a fan of how everything went down with the split at NYF. I don't believe that you should be on the moderator/admin team for two competing sites (and I expressed this). A conflict of interest occurs. Second, I wanted to be on the admin/founding team to have a say in exactly what happens with the website and community. I doubt that would have happened if I joined Avid Arms. I've worked with Hex for so long, that we're on the same page. I haven't worked with NYGuns for all that long, but he's got tons of experience with forums and the 3 of us have meshed very well from the very beginning.

It really looks great (I had been looking at the XenForo platform and now regret not using it) and seems to be off to a great start. I hope it continues and you guys do well. As far as I'm concerned you can never have too many pro 2A places for people to hang at. Never. With that said, I would like to state that nobody ever approached me about teaming up and quite frankly you would have been welcome with open Arms. Not sure if you ever discussed this with USMC but he never approached me about it either. As far as "the way it went down" I can tell you flat out that I started the other forum while sitting on my couch one night after I had enough with all the non sense that was happening (and apparently is still happening) at NYF. USMC had nothing to do with it and there was never any plan to team up with mods at NYF. That happened after site was already up and running. I happen to agree with you about conflicts with moding two boards at same time but it is what it is and water under the bridge at this point. Nope, we never spoke to anyone else. Maybe we should have. I totally understand you "sticking to your guns" and starting up Avid. I can see why you did it. I almost bailed at the same time due to lack of direction. NYF had none at the time. I had no problem with USMC leaving NYF either (just the mod/admin conflict). If people aren't happy with where they are, and there are better places for them, they should be leaving. Just like someone leaving a job for another one. You can't hold fault in others for trying to better their situation.
There's no reason people can't visit multiple sites.... as long as it's not NYF :jk:

Why couldn't the owners ,admins and moderators get together and have one group strictly for firearm the other politics. Topics linked like say I was at Avid and saw a thread like FUAC I wanted to see or post in that would bring you to NY Gun. Posting a thread Topic like mounting a scope at NY Gun would link to Avid.
Both groups would share membership and advertising. There would be sites for the political as well as the shooters.
All topics would be crossed linked.I am not a tech but could this work and benefit everyone?
We could be stronger together old friends staying in touch and increasing the data base for all to enjoy.

I asked to have Mod privilege taken away when I made the move and they didn't want to and I never took advantage of my access there. I remember waking up one morning not being a Mod and Mike sending me a PM which i couldn't reply to becuase I had to many PMs for a normal user lol.

The only issue that I see from switching sites back and forth to view or post is it has to effect the site count .
On any given day there could be 100 visits back and forth but it is the same member so that shouldn't count' And there is a thread just like this one at Avid asking the same question about getting members and involvement ,so we are thinking and doing almost the same things just a little younger group here and a few political posts

Lol. They're not the best at removing privileges. I posted my resignation on Friday afternoon to prove a point. Nobody took it away for days. Not sure if anyone actually realized why I did it though.
