Thats not a terrible idea but I do not agree with his statement that it can "run your house for days", at least not in NY. Lots of assumptions here but a car battery is about 60 aH on the high side, a furnace is about 600w plus what it takes to run the inverter. Your gas furnace may run 4-6 hours a day. Of course, the battery size and how much your furnace runs with the load generated are the consumption factors, lots of wiggle room for different equipment.
...Maybe one day in the dead of winter. Turning the thermostat down low enough to stop it from freezing and bundling up are the best choices.

keep in mind this guy is powering a old 80% furnace. I REALLY doubt this set up would run a 98% 2 stg variable speed furnace for very long.
even a 60K BTU Rheem 98% modulating gas valve, with a variable speed blower is going to pull 10amps on high fire~~~ that equals 1200 watts minimum.
at 60ah that battery will be dead in 20 hours ( or is that 2 hours??, Im not use to thinking this much LOL ) and how are you going to recharge the battery?? Now if he switched to a 200Ah Lithium Ion battery, it should last a few days, as long as you don't push it to hard

Beware of most models even Mr heater come out of factory with slight propane leak after being lit and running?

I have and use, a Mr Heater Big Buddy Heater in the Escape Pod. I usually let the on board furnace handle the overnight work. But in the morning I crank up the old Big buddy and Im toasty warm in no time.

Super insulation is a good thing.
I've got the thermostat set to 60, and I think the lowest it's gotten in here was like 68.
We did some playing around for cooling too.
If I open some doors and windows at night I can cool the place down pretty well. Not sure it would last through a whole day in the summer, but it would go a long way.
Anyway, that's my backup SHTF cooling plan (primary is the solar/battery backup and just running the HVAC normally).
I don't appear to need a backup heating plan out here. Although without power I would have a fair bit less "waste" heat from computers/refrigerator/etc, so it would probably get cooler in the winter. Still, 50s and 60s aren't exactly "oh shit" temps

Hook the inverter directly up to the battery while it's in the car and run a good (10g or 12g) extension cord to your furnace, The damn things don't draw more than 15 amps. And that way you can start the car every hour or so to keep from killing the battery.
(FWIW, I did that at my parents house in the previous November storm to keep their furnace and sump pump running for 3 days)

I got the woodstove. Can eat well and have heat.
I have a large kitchen cook stove…it heats the house and makes the meals in the winter. I’ll have the windows open and it’s stays 80 degrees life is good
