Empty shelves and long gas station lines were reported across the Southeast as coastal communities prepared Wednesday to flee deadly Hurricane Matthew.

A state of emergency was declared in Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas as the Category-3 hurricane crawled through the Caribbean and threatened a damaging rendezvous with the U.S. coast later this week

FLA here, just to tell you, I spent 18 years in Melbourne Florida ( Brevard county) and in 2004 we had 3 hurricanes in 6 weeks and another not too far after that. Smart people learn fast to stay prepared. Had my first bug out bag that year. This storm is gonna be a doozie.

That's the idiocy of the "government knows best" crowd. They never actually stop to think what they are saying is even possible or not. They just spout off without common sense and no logic.

All they have to say is simple, " anyone who chooses to not evacuate, you're on your own. There will be no government services to help you if you need it, we are not putting them in harm's way until after the storm is over, conditions improve and we can make roads safely passable."
Boom done deal, if you choose to stay behind, it's at your own risk.

Fla here again, mandatory evac simply means that you must leave and that if you don't, you are on your own. You will not be assisted if you call for help. Emergency services will not make ANY effort to assist you until it is safe for them. It means that people on the barrier islands, such as those who live on or near highway A1A which parallels the coast, will be unable to cross over to the mainland. Bridges will be impassable, not only because of high winds that make it physically impossible to cross, but gates that are down. If you are stupid enough to venture out and get caught, you are immediately arrested. You are assumed to be a looter. Exactly what Drinkthekoolaid was saying. Been there, know enough to get out.

I think it is great that the Government is putting out honest warnings. Let all the people know what is happening and best/worst of what may happen. I love that they are setting up areas of safe refuge.

I heard 4 dead so far .. hope thats all ... still just can't wrap my head around people that live in known hurricane areas still lack basic prepping ..

but the best news i read is that flooding in Florida Collages have washed away all the safe spaces ..
