I want something that eats steel...talk me into a Mosin

I’ve been bitten by the com bloc bug. I missed the boat on the SKS...just a few short months ago they were 350 bucks...now, if you can find them...yeesh.

I then expand my focus a bit to include the 762x54r. Damn cool cartridge; in fact, now I want one.

So naturally, I started looking at Mosins. Once piled into umbrella holders and sold for a song at my LGS, even these prolific battle rifles have gone up in price, recently.

So I come to you, good folks, who have yet to steer me wrong. Talk me into—or out of, I guess— a Mosin.

Nah, got more parts, though! I’ll be updating my other thread shortly. Got the LPK, buffer tube, and mag fixing device in the mail.

I‘m just getting handsy with the relative surplus of steel ammo around. One of my LGS keeps a pretty good running stock of odd military/Russian ammo, too.

Get one. Theyre a good learning platform. Simple to operate and maintain. Rugged. Fun to shoot. Not sure what they go for these days or if you can still find them but Collector in Hopewell always had a bunch in the racks.

150 for my 91/30 back in 2014.. and 350 for my M44 back in Jan/feb 2020 .. made in 44 too . i do like that combo thou ..

there fun to shoot .. can take it to a CMP shoot and bruise your shoulder up LOL .. get rim lock too ..

the best thing is get a Russian one .. pisses the left off LOL ..

for a old bolt gun they still work ..

first year rifle allowed in Livco for deer .. the 91/30 did it with my part ..

Kinda where I’m at. I actually kinda like Mosins, and while I always thought “Garbage Rod” was a bit too harsh, it’s hard to deny that when you have Enfields, Springfields, Mausers and Carcanos our there, it starts to get harder and harder to justify a Mosin.

Having said that, owning a vintage military bolt gun is in almost no way a practical decision. If you want one, I say get one. I have my own guns which I like, despite knowing I can make even less of a rational, logical justification for them than a Mosin.

They are a ton of fun to shoot. That said, I have not bought one in years. Prices have gone crazy. I bought all mine when they were still cheap. Same with surplus ammo.

They were worth it at $99 each.

When there's very accurate, reliable new production bolt actions for less than what they go for now, it is a very hard sell for me.

Honeslty, the design was obsolete by 1914. Having owned 3, they are neither overly accurate, smooth, or pleasant to shoot for me. Your mileage may vary.


That being said, they are "good enough" and are still killing animals all over the w

There are certainly better modern rifles out there in the same price range as the Mosin now that C&R prices have jumped. The comm bloc mystique/history is worth something you can’t get in a new gun.

Mosin-Nagant is a vintage military rifle soaked in history. This is what makes it desirable even at today's prices. For hunting and target shooting I would just buy a modern commercial rifle.

The price is to high nowadays, keep an eye out for an sks. They will pop up you just have to be ready. I have a Mosin its a good one shoots strait trigger not to bad. But not worth 400 . Even an sks isn't worth 400 but its much better then paying for an old 91/30

Get a CZ 527 in 6.5 Grendel or 7.62X39

Genuine sniper Mosins are very accurate rifles. Contrary to misinformation they are not plain Mosins with a scope slapped on. They were made in a special machine shop, on different machinery to different standards. Even different machining methods were utilized.

Hey, like I said. It’s ok to buy something just because you want it. Not everything has to be perfectly rooted in logic. I’m a fan of quirky things (which often means flawed), and sometimes it’s that hitch in the gitup which makes something kinda special.

To be fair, I would almost dismiss at least the accuracy part of it. 5moa seemed to have been a reasonable military standard up through WWII.
